The slogan at Jeannie’s Pub & Grub: “You wish, we dish.” If your wish is to grab a juicy burger, saucy chicken wings or a homey dish like meatloaf or chicken pot pie, Jeannie’s can definitely dish it out. Jeannie and Steve Rotert have owned the Plantation restaurant and bar for nine years. It’s the type of place where you’re bound to run into your neighbor grabbing a Bud and a bite to eat. Given its location on Broward Boulevard, west of U.S. 441, it’s also a convenient and inexpensive stop for hungry travelers.
The menu includes a long list of pub grub like mozzarella sticks, potato skins and onion rings. When I asked the bartender taking my order if there was any starter that wasn’t fried, she joked: “If it’s not fried, it’s not good.” But we did find a pretty good serving of smoked fish dip with crackers, celery and carrot sticks. Wings are a favorite here and you can get an order of 12 or 18 (or 50 or 100 if you’re feeding a group) served mild or hot or with honey-mustard, barbecue, teriyaki or lemon pepper sauce. My daughter loves the tangy sauce with their flavorful Buffalo wings.
We are also fans of their 8-ounce burger, which we get on a kaiser roll. The burgers are perfectly grilled, with juices running down your arm, garnished with lettuce, tomato and onions. Lots of choices here too, including a house burger with hot peppers, mushrooms and provolone or blue cheese. On the healthier side, there’s a grilled dolphin sandwich.
It’s hard to beat the value on dinners here, which change nightly, and are $6.50 with two sides. The list usually includes comfort food like our chicken-fried steak with rich, creamy gravy and a fat roast beef melt that was a little greasy but so good. We grabbed a slice of old-fashioned coconut cream pie topped with a mountain of meringue for dessert.
If you get here before your order’s ready, visit with the friendly crowd, catch a game on one of the seven TVs or play a game of darts on an electronic board while you wait.
