First Look: Dragonfly adds to Doral dining scene

The who: Owners Hirofumi P. Leung and Song Y. Kim open their third Dragonfly outpost and the first in South Florida. (The other two reside in Gainesville and Orlando.)

The space: A cavernous dining room outfitted with red leather chairs, distressed wood floors, iron-encased hanging lanterns and Asian fabrics. An indoor-outdoor bar, sushi kitchen, and several private dining areas contribute to the bustling atmosphere. An adjoining fish market stocks house-made bottled sauces, sake and eventually fresh seafood and grab-and-go bento boxes.

The dishes: Trendy Asian. The epic menu is divided into sashimi and nigiri, noodles and rice, robata, veggies, sushi, and larger entree style dishes. Prices are not as high as expected given the surroundings: starters $5-$15 and mains $12-$40.

Start with small plates like cauliflower goma miso dressed with sweet golden raisins and pine nuts or edamame sauteed with butter and togarashi spice. Tempura dishes such as maitake mushrooms will please those looking to chase a hangover while the robata grill serves up proteins such as Loch Duart miso salmon, pork cheeks, rib eye and Alaskan king crab. The beef udon or fish and chips are good for sharing while the “Neck to Tail” menu comprises Japanese-style chicken skewers of thighs, tail, skin, liver and neck. 

Sushi offerings include rolls like the Ryu made with salmon with cucumber and a “snow crab delight” then topped with avocado, tuna, tempura flakes and a togarashi spice mixture. The sea kai roll is made with salmon and a creamy crab mixture along with tomato, balsamic and a garlic shiso chimichurri.

Cuatro Leches with green tea matcha and profiterole with green tea ice cream round out the dessert menu. 

Bottom line: Doral’s dining scene is about get very exciting, and Dragonfly is just the beginning.
