The who: Nightlife guru Dave Grutman partners with restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow on this flashy cathedral of Asian cooking.
The space: A multi-level space on the ground floor of a Brickell office building, the dining room is awash in oversized bamboo-shaped pillars, red ceiling panels and semi-circular booths. An outdoor garden features elevated “birds nest” lounges probably best suited for small groups. A third-floor lounge is in the works.
The dishes: Pan-Asian with Chinese, Thai and Japanese influences. Expect plenty of spins on the Greatest Hits of Asian cooking with high-roller touches like black truffles and lobster. Prices are on par for a nightlife-friendly venue with starters averaging $14 and mains in the $30’s. The Peking Duck service (including crepes and accoutrements) is $92.
There are a handful of sushi rolls like the one made with toro tuna but it’s the mushroom roll made with tempura-fried enoki mushrooms and topped with black truffles that offer unique spins. Small plates include the “Lobster Dynamite,” essentially the crispy rice spicy tuna bite done with lobster instead, “Angry shrimp” dumplings, miso cod skewers, lobster onion rings, lamb short Ribs, duck fried rice and tempura shrimp with ginger aioli. Grutman’s family recipe is the basis for the pastrami egg rolls, stuffed with cabbage and served with spicy mustard. Mains include the Chilean sea bass with white truffle broth and enoki mushrooms and topped with more truffles and Grilled Szechuan Beef and Hacked Lime Chicken. Bigger appetites (or groups) can opt for a tuna porterhouse or the Peking Duck service.
Desserts include an ice cream sundae with flavors of coconut and pina colada and a matcha green tea custard with sponge cake and white chocolate.
Bottom Line: It’s an Asian restaurant from the mastermind behind LIV, so expect plenty of sceney types in addition to all that Peking duck.
