Agave Mexican fusion looks like yet another fast food destination in Deerfield Beach. But wait till you take your first bite. Agave is a new venture from Mario Di Leo and chef Chris Wilber, owners of popular Canyon Southwest Cafe in Fort Lauderdale.
Patrons order at the counter and food is made to order, utilizing some of the Southwestern spices and flavors that make Canyon’s menu a treat. To speed things up, order in advance. But if you come in for takeout, as we did — it’s only a block from the beach — the setting is bright and colorful and there’s a pleasant patio.
Open since July 19, Agave focuses on burritos, quesadillas, tacos, tostadas and a few extras like cilantro rice and a wonderfully creamy guacamole served with homemade warm (if you get them home quickly) tortilla chips. They are so much more flavorful than average chips, seasoned with Wilber’s spice mixture (a little cayenne, ancho chile powder, rosemary…).
Barbecue shrimp tostada is heavenly, borrowing from a dish served at Canyon. Crispy light tortillas are topped with grilled black tiger shrimp, some toasted corn and a drizzling of Monterey Jack, Cheddar and cilantro cream.
Go for fish tacos, made with tilapia, or also delicious steak— you can get one or a trio. The pulled pork burrito is huge and savory.
Condiments change at Agave but we especially like the watermelon salsa, cool and refreshing with a jalapeño kick.
For now, Agave offers beer and wine, but owners are working on getting a liquor license, which means: Canyon’s signature prickly pear margaritas are on the way.
