100 Montaditos

The goods: Consider the typical baguette. Crusty. Substantial. Now take that sandwich, tapas-size it, give it a hundred different fillings, pair it with frosty glasses of Spanish beer and you’ve got Cerveceria 100 Montaditos. The midtown eatery has a fast-casual vibe. Place orders by checking off boxes on the paper menu, bring it to the counter, pay and wait for the kitchen to call your name. Draft beer is served in 9-ounce jars and priced at $2; wine is available for $3 a glass. Be sure to stop in on Wednesday when all the sandwiches and beer are just $1 all day long.

Ambience: This is the first American outpost of the popular Madrid-based chain and it feels like a modern neighborhood saloon with high-top tables, a giant flat-screen beaming foreign soccer games and a large bar stocked with half a dozen taps of Mahou Estrella beer.

The Grub: Tapas in mini-sandwich form. The namesake montadito is a 4-inch sub ($1-$2.50) available in a dizzying variety of combos – tortilla española with tomato and olive oil, pulled barbecue pork with cream cheese, duck mousse with crispy onions. There’s a short list of snacks like Spanish olives, mixed nuts and potato chips. The brava potatoes are classic chunks of fried spuds with a mildly spicy tomato sauce. Salads are $5 and include a chicken Caesar, roast beef on mixed greens and salmon with olives.

The sandwich selection can be a bit overwhelming, so it’s best to stick with what the place does well – cured meats. The Serrano ham baguettes are the most popular, followed by the pulled pork, chorizo and lacon (Spanish ham). Try anything with marinated anchovies or the smoked salmon. Most sandwiches are slathered with olive oil, aioli or tomatoes. The tortilla española made a dry, heavy filling, but vegetarians will appreciated the Iberico cheese sandwiches.  Those with a sweet tooth should try the chocolate spread with almonds.

The Verdict: $2 beers and $1 sandwiches make this fun Spanish import a welcome addition to Midtown.
