Just Eat It
Michael Jackson would have been only 57 on Aug. 29 had he not met his untimely demise back in 2009. Remembering the good times – and the wacky times – STK Miami, 2311 Collins Ave., is celebrating Jacko’s birthday with a big dinner party on Saturday from 8 p.m. to midnight. The party will feature classic tunes spun by DJ Danny Stern and Marital as well as trivia games and entertainment. There will also be King of Pop-inspired cocktails priced at $15 including the “Dirty Diana,” a mashup of Brugal anejo rum, ginger beer and fresh lime juice, and the “Smooth Criminal” which mixes Baileys Original Irish Cream Liqueur, Bulleit Bourbon and Kahlua. Sounds like it’s going to be Off the Wall. Heh. For reservations, call 305-604-6988.
Howl at the Moon
Almost as often as National Days of Assorted Snack Foods, Full Moon parties are common in these parts, but not all are created equal. The National Hotel, 1677 Collins Ave., is throwing a party that promises to stand apart from the rest, starting at 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28 and sporting a nifty Roma theme. As such, there will be fire dancers, tarot card and palm readers, flamenco guitarists and hopefully a little channeling of Stevie Nicks or Gypsy Rose Lee. The Red Bull-sponsored event will feature an extended happy hour, BBQ and $15 valet parking.
Whisky a Go Go
There are whiskeys that your drunk uncle loves to chug and then there are whiskeys that make hipsters grow beards and stuff. In celebration of its year-long anniversary, South Miami hot spot Station 5 Table & Bar, 5845 Sunset Drive, will be throwing several events including a whiskey tasting with High West Whiskey at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28. Revelers will get to sip on craft whiskey cocktails and tastings of three blends of the stuff: American Prairie Reserve Bourbon, Double Rye and Campfire. A brand ambassador will be on hand to explain the finer points of sipping and distilling for those who care, and you, unlike your drunk uncle, know you care about those sort of things. Party is open to the public.
Another Brick in the Wall
Millennials and wanna be youngsters may be tired of hearing about South Beach’s so-called halcyon days, but not all those good times are entirely in the past. In fact, many of them have evolved into what you do today on Miami’s nightlife circuit. One such influencer who deserves the title of pioneer is Nicola Siervo, owner and co-founder of Wall and hospitality agency the KNR Group whose contributions to Miami’s evolution as an international jet setty hot spot are immeasurable and came in the form of, among other things, Joia, Bang, Mynt, and Mokai. Give the guy a pat on the back as he celebrates his big 5-0 with a huge bash on Saturday, Aug. 29 at Wall. Expect lots of surprises and music by Chicco Secci and DJ Ferro. Happy Birthday, Nicola! Here’s to more decades of intelligent decadence!
Bookworms and boozehounds go together like a worm and a bottle of tequila. In fact, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, Regent Cocktail Club, 1690 Collins Ave., and Bookleggers mobile library, which donates and trades books once a month in cool and hip public spaces, have teamed up for a “fun cocktail enthusiast soiree,” complete with free cocktail books and cocktail-crafting tools. While Bookleggers gives away one free cocktail book per person, readers and boozy types will sip drinks from, yet again, High West Whiskey, which will teach everyone how to make their own drinks. Parting gifts include a free cocktail tool. For those who want more than one book, each additional one is a bargain basement $2 – you can’t even get a drink for that price, which is why reading is not only fundamental, it’s much more affordable than other assorted indulgences.
