Fight nights, Derby days, comedy & Cinco de Mayo

Brute Punch
While some, ahem, may consider the showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao  as over hyped as Bruce Jenner, others are betting big on it, literally and figuratively. It’s a win win for everyone, however, when you head to the E11even Rooftop, 15 NE 11th St. at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 2 for an al fresco (the roof retracts, so no worries on weather) viewing party with bottle service, fire pit tables, full menu and knockout scene. Admission starts at $20 for women and $40 for men. For reservations, go to Batch Gastropub, 30 SW 12th St., is also having a watch party from 7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on all 14 HDTVs and 2 HD projectors. There will be $5 Tecate and $7.50 Russian Standard Vodka and Redbull bombs all night long with ‘ring girls’ giving out free stuff. Anyone who gets there before 7:30 p.m. gets a free drink. Tickets are available here

Derby Deals
The pomp and circumstance of the Kentucky Derby lasts longer than the actual race or perhaps the aforementioned boxing match, but who really cares when you’re watching the race from 50 Eggs’ fine establishments BTW (1439 Alton Road), Swine (2415 Ponce de Leon Blvd.) and Yardbird (1600 Lenox Ave.)?  There, you’ll get to imbibe in $10 “Big Ass Mint Juleps” and menu specials such as Yardbird’s $16 Derby Platter of cornmeal fried oysters, fried chicken, watermelon and farmer’s cheese skewers and smoked mixed nuts. For those who can’t get to KY, but want to feel like they’re there anyway, there will be prizes for the best hats. Also getting in on the equestrian action is Tongue & Cheek, 431 Washington Ave., whose 2nd annual Kentucky Derby Party starts at 5 p.m.and features happy hour specials and derby drinks such as Woodford Reserve Kentucky Coladas and Kaffir Lime Mint Juleps. There are also food specials such as Kentucky Hot Browns and chocolate chip pecan pie and a contest for women’s best hat and best dressed man. Race broadcast post time is 6:24 p.m.  Race should be over by 6:25 but the deals continue, so saddle up and settle in!

Everyone’s a Comedian
Comedy is like beauty in a way. What’s funny to some may be the antithesis of such to others. And that’s why The Magic City Casino is on the hunt for the Ultimate Miami Comedian, with a search at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, May 8 and May 16 at Stage 305, 450 NW 37th Ave. They’re also taking the search to the Improv in Palm Beach.  There, you’ll get to witness possibly the big winner of a $5,000 cash prize at the June 27 finals and opportunity to share the stage with comic superstar Carlos Mencia at a future date. To register, go to To watch, just go. It’s free. Laughter, however, is not guaranteed.

Drinko de Mayo
Everyone’s having a Cinco de Mayo party it seems, because, well, why not? But the one we particularly like the sound of is a free one from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on the Gale Rooftop, 1690 Collins Ave., where, in addition to music by DJ Pirate Stero and the Fox Brothers, there will be a build-your-own margarita bar, pinatas and, because, well, why not, a dog adoption area. Because nothing says the 5th of May like adopting a dog. Maybe a chihuahua, maybe not.
