Night at the Races

Oh, Wynwood, hub of all things hip and happening and now, every Thursday, all things hermit–as in hermit crab, which will crawl their way to hopeful victory every Thursday at Cafeina Wynwood, 297 NW 23rd St. during NASCRAB (heh) night. There, the speedy crustacean will participate in 12 heat races–each one gives you a chance to win a two for one drink ticket and a spot in the final race for a bucket of beer. A variety of craft beer will be available at $5 a pop and BBQ items including perros, chicken kebabs, sliders, rubs and fries (no, no crab) will be available at $2 each. Those who don’t dig the racing can dance to the tune of DJ Self Born or play Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis games. Happy Hour also lasts until 8 p.m., featuring $5 across the board beverages of beer, wine and cocktails. 

 


Jump on the Paddle Wagon

Not all art in Florida is as prohibitive to the 99 % as an apartment in one of the umpteen hyper luxe buildings dotting the skyline. In fact, Buzz Art Auction makes masterpieces affordable and charitable, benefiting Best Buddies International and Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida during their April 1 auction slash party at the Ritz Carlton South Beach, 1 Lincoln Road, presented by JetSmarter, instant purveyor of private jets flown by those who do own places in those aforementioned buildings. and even if you aren’t in the market for art, there’s plenty of other things to do at this soiree. From 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., there will be DJs, in house painting, open bar, and hors d’oeuvres. Pigging Out

If you’re partial for pig, from head to snout and everything in between, by the power of–wait for it–swine intervention, you can dive in like a hog in mud when Cochon555 sets up its pristine pen at the Ritz-Carlton, South Beach, 1 Lincoln Road. Starting at 4 p.m. with a big cocktail reception for those purchasing a $200 VIP ticket and 5 p.m. for those with $125 General Admission, five chefs–Anthony LePape (Ritz-Carlton, South Beach), Xavier Torres (Drunken Dragon), Alex Chang (Vagabond), Michael Fiorello (Beachcraft) and Diego Oka (La Mar by Gaston Acurio) –will prepare a maximum of six dishes from one whole hog. You and a panel of judges will decide who’s crowned the Prince of Porc who will go on to the finals this summer in Aspen. Hip to the Hops

Brewing somewhat ironically in the space formerly known as the RC Cola Plant at 550 NW 24th Street in Wynwood is Sprung! Spring Beer Festival, taking place from either 2:30 p.m., 3 p.m., or 4 p.m. (depending on your ticket) to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 2 and featuring over 300 (!) craft beers, live music and bar games such as b
eer pong, giant Jenga, corn hole and bocce.  A $40 general admission ticket gets you unlimited samples of beer and a 4 p.m. entry while a $70 ticket gets you early admission at 3 p.m. plus a few other perks. High rollers can spend $90, get in at 2:30 p.m. and have access to air conditioned bathrooms with attendants and apps in the VIP tent.
