From a garage to the road and a slot on the 2008 Vans Warped Tour lineup, it’s been an unreal summer for A Dream of Reality. Fresh out of Coral Springs, AJ Diaferio (lead vocals), Dan Dyko (lead guitar/vocals/songwriter), Ben Perman (bass/vocals), Kevin Welch (keys/guitar/vocals) and Mike Beruty (drums/vocals) play for hometown fans when the premiere summer tour stops at Bicentennial Park on Saturday, July 12.
“Coming from five kids working part-time jobs and 9-5s to a touring band was just mind blowing,” said Beruty. The youngest member of the band at 18, Beruty started on the drums his freshman year of high school. His uncle passed on a four-piece Yamaha stage custom kit and Beruty has been playing ever since.
ADOR has built a grassroots following, playing at skate parks and local venues like Pembroke Pines’ The Talent Farm. They eventually caught the attention of emerging indie label Powerline Records, which helped them get the last-minute slot on the Warped Tour’s Indie Power stage.
Songs (as well as a couple videos) off their screamo/emo debut It’s Nothing Personal can be heard on a number of college stations, as well as their MySpace page. Falling in the same category as Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance, the band blends many types of sounds to make what Beruty describes as “ear candy.” “During our shows we deliver raw energy and aggressive jaw-clenching tones that’ll make you get the chills,” said Beruty. “The CD is the kind of thing you could sing along with in the car with all your friends and have it stuck in your head for days on end.”
The ambitious quintet plans to make new fans at all the Warped Tour stops while getting out as much as they put in. “Expectations can be a lot to live up to,” said Beruty. “We tend to deliver with every performance, like it’s the last time we’ll ever play and the last time you’ll ever hear it. So come hang out. We’d love to meet anyone and everyone.”
The band also follows a similar path as New Found Glory, who also started in SoFla and was part of past Warped Tour lineups. Right now the group is enjoying life on the road, getting the most out of their opportunity. “We are absolutely honored to be such a part of a historical event,” said Beruty. “This is monumental for the band and a huge landmark in all our lives.”
