Attendees of a VIP screening Saturday night of the upcoming EDM (electronic dance music) movie “We Are Your Friends,” had heard a surprise was in order, so when director Max Joseph ambled out to the microphone in front of the screen, most assumed he was it.
But more was in store at the event, held at Regal Cinemas South Beach Stadium 18 in Miami Beach. Joseph (“Catfish”) told the crowd, “You’re one of the first audiences ever to see this movie. I know you’re not here just to see me…bring them out!” Following a few bulky bodyguards were the stars of the flick, Zac Efron, who plays an aspiring DJ, and model turned actress Emily Ratajkowski, who costars as an assistant to a famous DJ.
After the screaming died down, Efron greeted the audience with “What’s up, guys? How’s Miami!”
“Wow full house this is awesome,” said Ratajkowski (“Gone Girl”), who plays the assistant to a famous DJ and Efron’s mentor. “We just landed. And we’re loving Miami already.”
Efron was excited to show the film that follows the EDM scene in the San Fernando Valley as well as the plight of aimless 20 something males.
“We’re so stoked,” said the onetime “High School Musical” star. “It’s a honor an d pleasure to be here. Thank you for being our friends. We are your friends, too. We love you…let’s do it!”
After the screening. an afterparty was held at Grand Central club downtown featuring Them Jeans, aka Los Angeles DJ Jason Stewart, who taught Efron how to spin for real.
Later, Efron came out for a few sets, along with Joseph and Ratajkowski, thanked the crowd again and took a huge, panaramic selfie.
