It’s not often than a successful nightclub undergoes a bit of a facelift just after celebrating its first year of being open.
But that is exactly what is happening at WALL at W South Beach, which re-opens on Thursday, Oct. 14 after just 10 days (or one party weekend) of renovation time.
Owners Karim Masri and Nicola Siervo, who were involved in Mynt and Mokai before opening WALL, found inspiration for the re-design back in March during Winter Music Conference week.
With so many top-name DJs performing that week, they removed the club’s signature X-shaped couch from the middle of the room (which forced guests to walk in circles when moving around the room or to the main bar) and moved the DJ booth to a more up front location. The temporary fix worked so well they decided that at some point they would make the changes permanent for the club that was ranked No. 7 in the world by AskMen.com.
“The redesign is to enhance what was currently there,” Karim said. “We are adding LED behind the bars with diamond-shaped beveled mirror tiles to go along with the diamond-shaped tiles that clad our walls.”
“We are relocating the DJ booth so that the new location will face the main bar and will enhance the DJ’s exposure and thus the energy of the club,” Nicola added.
“And we are changing the furniture layout in the center of the room in order to improve the flow of people and the comfort of our guests so they can criss-cross the room rather than just go around the room,” Karim said.
The “piece de resistance” will be the new Ana Busta-designed 35-inch spherical Raimond chandelier, from the Dutch design house Moooi, that will hang from the center of the space (no more disco ball) and will be used by the lighting techs during a DJ performance. No other club in Miami has a chandelier that glows to the beats.
All of the new couches, LED mirrors and the chandelier were created off-site and made ready for installation, thus allowing for such a quick turnaround.
“The design is reminiscent of a futuristic James Bond movie, mixed with Tron,” Karim said.
But it should be expected from an ownership group that not only is looking to expand into Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but also has a successful food and beverage venture with Lincoln Road restaurants Quattro and Sosta and Solea inside the W South Beach.
“You can put gold on the walls, but if the team behind the club is not established and well known locally, it doesn’t stand a chance,” Nicola said.
