Stars awash in a sea of color

Fashion at the Golden Globes never disappoints. Because this awards ceremony is more casual than its stiffer cousin the Oscars, you see more color and less black, which is left for the guys.

Green seemed to be one big theme, with Angelina Jolie leading the charge in a sparkly full length yet sexy Atelier Versace. Mila Kunis showed the world she’s really growing up in a ruched emerald Vera Wang. Catherine Zeta-Jones opted for a forest green Monique Lhuillier but was less successful, in what could have passed for Scarlett O’Hara’s drapes.

Anne Hathaway tried — and also failed — with a ’40s style champagne Armani with shoulder pads an NFL linebacker would envy. Didn’t Anne learn anything from The Devil Wears Prada?

Halle Berry worked the sexpot angle in a black lingerie-like Nina Ricci get-up that had a sheer train. She almost made best actor winner Paul Giamatti (Barney’s Version) faint when she presented his award.

What happened to Sandra Bullock? The megastar is usually a hit on the red carpet, but her Jenny Packham gown was as frumpy as my grandma’s tablecloth. Plus her bangs were too long (fire your hair stylist!).

Leighton Meester didn’t do herself a favor in that Burberry Prorsum dress that Laura Ingalls Wilder would covet from the grave.

There were a few one-shouldered wonders, like Glee‘s Lea Michele, ladylike in tea rose Oscar de la Renta. But Julianne Moore missed her mark in what looked to be a giant cocoon fastened to her arm. It was a respectable label, too — Lanvin.

Emma Stone and Claire Danes wore coral Calvin Kleins. The former rocked hers, the latter (who is less shapely), not so much. But Danes had a hot accessory — husband Hugh Dancy.

January Jones stole the show in a zigzaggy Versace. Olivia Wilde, too, got herself noticed in a silver puffy stunner by Marchesa. Now, her bangs were the right length. Solid navy accentuated Amy Adams‘ post pregnancy bod and Kyra Sedgwick‘s gamble on her ruffly mustard Emilio Pucci paid out.

Was Jennifer Lopez going to renew her vows to Marc Anthony in that Zuhair Murad dress? No other reason for all that white. New mom (her daughter Faith was born via surrogate) Nicole Kidman made her ivory Prada shine through the rainbow pack, though.

Sparklers of the night (literally): Megan Fox, who is not only gorgeous but played the Hollywood-princess role to the heights in a pink tight Armani Privé sheath with crystals. And Black Swan beauty Natalie Portman, in a silky Viktor & Rolf dress with a Swarovski rose brooch, was glowing in the way only moms-to-be — and Globe winners — do.

Final fashion follies: Christina Aguilera squeezed into a lacy mermaid number that was so 1987, and Helena Bonham Carter raised well-plucked eyebrows with one green shoe, one red. The only excuse is that it was dark in her dressing room.
