Secret letter revealed

In celebration of the launch of his new thriller The Inner Circle, author and South Florida resident Brad Meltzer revealed the secret letter that President George H.W. Bush left in the Oval Office desk for Bill Clinton. While researching the novel, Meltzer asked Bush if George Washington’s spy ring could still exist today, as it does in his book, and if the knowledge of that ring could pass from president to president in the secret letters each leader puts in the Oval Office desk when he leaves office.

In response, Bush sent Meltzer the secret letter he left for Clinton; the last line read, “I am rooting for you.” What was Bush’s reaction now that the letter is out there? Meltzer told us he got word Tuesday from Bush’s office, saying, “What he wrote to Clinton didn’t just prove he was a great president, but a great man.” Meltzer will discuss more at his signing at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Books & Books Coral Gables.
