Highlights of Premios Juventud recap 2016

A night of throwbacks, collaborations and screaming fans are basically what Premios Juventud 2016 was all about.

Described as Univision’s Youth Choice Awards, the show had a “Throwback Thursday” theme along with the hashtag #TBTPJ. The Bank United Center was filled with familiar artists and musicians including Sophia Carson, Pitbull, Laura Pausini, Maluma, J Balvin, Jesse & Joy, Becky G, Victoria Justice and Casper Smart, among others.

“It’s my first time here and I’m very excited, very honored to be here,” said Sofia Carson. “Yesterday in rehearsals I saw a glimpse of Pitbull and I was freaking out. I’m a huge Pitbull and Enrique Iglesias fan so I’m very excited to see them.”

The “TBT” theme brought along an array of new generation music mixed with classics such as the “Macarena” by Los Del Rio, “El Tiburon” by Proyecto Uno, “Pelo Suelto” by Gloria Trevi and “La Quiero a Morir” by DLG.

However, the award-winners, which are picked by the fans, surprised many.

Gente de Zona, Wisin, Nicky Jam, Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, Adele and Luis Coronel all took home an award, but the stars of the night were new boy band – and current internet sensation – CNCO.

Here are our picks for the five best things about Premios Juventud 2016:

1. The Macarena

Los Del Rio played homage to the #TBT theme and had everybody – well – singing and shaking it to “Heeeey Macarena!” The song, which has it’s own Wikipedia page (talk about well known) was released in 1993 and continues its legacy at every piñata, birthday party, quinceañera and now also at a Premios Juventud. “We are so happy because being here with the Macarena is really so great, and we expect to come back another year with more songs,” said Los Del Rio.

2. Jesse & Joy’s 1970’s retro vibes

Watching Jesse & Joy perform their song in a psychedelic hippie-style stage with a vibrantly colorful Volkswagen beetle was like being in the scene from “Across the Universe”, only there’s no strawberry fields, nobody is on acid (at least we don’t think so), and we’re in the Bank United Center. Everybody waved their hands from side to side as the brother and sister serenaded the crowd.

3. CNCO’s joy

The boyband took home five awards including “My Pop/Rock Artist,” “Producer’s Choice Award,” “My Favorite Twitter Celebrity,” “Catchiest Tune” and “#PJLook – Male.” The “Quisiera” singers recently commented on their excitement about being able to attend and for being nominated by their fans – known as CNCOwners – for so many awards thanks to high votes.

4. William Levy’s – um – butt * heart-eyed emoji here *

He wore really tight pants, so that had every girl, and almost every guy, looking over that perfectly plump derrière. Not only is William Levy smoking hot, but he’s also super Cuban and proud. Anyone with those credentials has a safe place in our and every other woman’s heart.

5. Becky G channeling Britney Spears

In 2001 a young Britney Spears performed her hit “Slave 4 U” at MTV’s Video Music Awards. Thursday night Becky G waltzed around stage in a multi-colored geometric-shaped bodysuit, singing her first Spanish single, “Sola” while carrying a big yellow python for a few minutes. Though we couldn’t tell whether the 19-year-old Mexican-American singer was scared or not, she sure took us back to when Britney had yet to shave her head, and we all loved it.
