Inside The Hall South Beach, Joie de Vivre's first east coast property

Another month, another new hotel opening. The Hall South Beach (1500 Collins Ave., South Beach; 305-531-1251), a Joie de Vivre property (and sister brand to Thompson, which debuted in Miami Beach last year), opened its doors to guests earlier this month inside the former Haddon Hall hotel on 15th and Collins. It’s the latest in a string of stylish lifestyle hotels at relatively affordable price points to roll out across Miami Beach, including Hyatt Centric, AC Hotel, Aloft and Circa 39. This is good news for travelers seeking a great value who count stylish digs, down-to-earth, delicious dining and prime location as top priorities. There’s more inventory on the beach than ever before.

While new to the east coast, Joie de Vivre is a long-established brand on the west coast that debuted in San Francisco in 1987. “It’s true to its California roots,” says Jimmy Blakeslee, The Hall’s director of sales & marketing. “It’s casual, playful and whimsical, while sitting within the local neighborhood’s culture.”

The 1.4 acre compound borders both Collins and Washington Avenues one block away from the beach, composed of three separate buildings, including the former Campton Apartments, which—fun fact—were home to the fictional Ace Ventura, Pet Detective back in the day. They tapped interior designer Robert McKinley of Montauck’s dreamy-beachy Surf Lodge to create the tropical retro-Moderniste vibe at The Hall. McKinley’s made his mark on Miami as of late and was also behind the tromp l’oielle-tropic design of El Tucán cabaret in Brickell.

Guest rooms at The Hall are minimalist and chill with dip-dyed walls in pastel turquoise and a vague 1970s Palm Springs cabana vibe with design details like air plants, psychedelic print upholstery and white whicker vanity stools. They’ve made the most of the space, but it’s hard to shake the dank mustiness of the building’s old bones in some of the 163 guest rooms.

The central courtyard is home to the property’s 50-meter swimming pool lined with circus-like striped cabanas reminiscent of the Thompson’s poolscape. The property also boasts Sunny’s, an appropriately chill eatery by Top Chef alum and Florida surfer dude Spike Mendelsohn who grew up in Clearwater and made a career as restaurateur in Washington, D.C. The idea for Sunny’s was dreamed up last year during South Beach Wine & Food Festival when Mendelsohn hosted a chef’s volleyball tournament at the Thompson. “It was the right moment with the right people involved,” he explains. With grub inspired by the beach, the menu features everything from fresh juices to poke bowls and chicken and waffles.

Longtime Michael’s Genuine Hospitality Group beverage director and mixologist Ryan Goodspeed heads The Hall’s beverage program, which includes the retro chic Holiday’s cocktail bar, a perfectly inviting den for an aperitif or nightcap. Additionally, Campton Yard is the 5,000-square-foot beer garden set to open in early 2016 underneath an ancient banyan tree on the Washington Avenue side of the property.

With opening rates ranging from $189-$229 a night, all of this adds up to another solid option for South Beach travelers.
