Mandy Moore gets animated
In Tangled, singer lets her hair down
Mandy Moore is a big fan of Disney films. Growing up, she idolized the princesses from Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid. When the time came for the 26-year-old to audition for the lead role as Rapunzel in Disney's Tangled (in theaters now) Moore knew she had big shoes to fill. "I'm sort of nerdy about it now, but at first I was reluctant to try out for the role," she says. "I was worried I would disappoint myself." Ultimately, she took a chance. "It was a huge opportunity for me, not only did I get to do a dialogue, I got to sing a song, too." Filming Tangled was a blast. "I found the process creatively fulfilling. I had to employ my own imagination. There weren't other actors around so I had to focus on my own energy." And she could sport shorts to work. "I loved that aspect of being casual. I didn't have to sit through the long process of hair and makeup and wake up super early." Rapunzel -- with all her quirkiness and eccentricity -- allowed Moore to explore her adventurous side. Now she hopes to add more spice in life with hubby Ryan Adams. "I have these lofty ideas of living a sort of life of traveling and being free." Playing the locked-up blondie also sparked some emotion in the singer/actress. "I know what it's like to be separated from loved ones. More often than not this job takes you away from your foundation and family." Though she shows no signs of taking time off. In the past year, her screen career has gotten a jump-start (who could forget her guest appearance as a terrorized hospital patient on Grey's Anatomy). Next up, she'll star as a newlywed marriage counselor in Dermot Mulroney's directorial debut, Love, Wedding, Marriage and is heading back to the studio to work on a new album. But what about Rapunzel? Did she and her sweetie Flynn end up living out their fairy tale? "I definitely think they have a family. Happy ever after is lovely, but I think there needs to be a challenge ahead," she says. "I'm ready for the sequel!''
