The goods: Lee & Marie’s Cakery, a bakery-café with a philanthropic bent, brings ’50s-style confections and employment opportunities for autistic adults to South Beach.
Ambience: The cheery dining room is outfitted with antique china plates, old-fashioned armoires and a rustic wooden communal table.
The grub: Bake-sale favorites, gourmet sandwiches and Panther Coffee. Prices are reasonable: Sweets average $3-$5 and sandwiches $9. Quinoa with microgreens and Caesar salad with kale share the menu with the BLT&A sandwich blending country bread, pork belly, kimchi aioli and avocado and smoked salmon with crème fraiche. Treat a sweet tooth to layer cakes, Boston crème pies, parfaits, coffee pudding, madeleines and Meyer lemon bars.
Verdict: A pastry cafe/coffee shop/bistro designed to sate a sugar and caffeine fix.
