Bored of summer and tired of the heat? Plan a day of SUPs (Stand Up Paddle Boards), visit a Miami legend and throw your friends in while you’re at it.
Are you already bored of summer (and tired of the heat) and don’t know what to do?
Hit the Rickenbacker Causeway, explore Virginia Key and Key Biscayne and plan a day of SUPs (Stand Up Paddle Boards), visit a Miami legend and throw your friends in while you’re at it.
Morning / Local Coffee Shop
Meet your friends at a central location and ride together to Virginia Key and Key Biscayne (you can feel good about your carbon footprint, split the $1.50 toll, and maneuver more easily together).
11 a.m. / Paddle Boarding at Sailboard Miami
Windsurfer Beach, off of Rickenbacker Causeway. 305-361-7245. Website: sailboardsmiami.com
Paddle boarding is a relatively new sport here in Miami (2 years old) and it is a blast. If you have ever canoed or kayaked, a 15 minute overview should be all the instruction you need. For everyone else, consider investing in the 30 minute lesson before you begin. Prices are reasonable ($55 for two hours). Settled right off the Rickenbacker Causeway, Sailboards Miami gives you access to paddle to the backyard of Vizcaya for some beautiful views of the museum and gardens. And, along the way, there is always a chance for a dolphin or manatee sighting. The board itself is very versatile: you can lay out on it when you get tired, surf some of the small waves in the bay and even practice yoga on it (if you’re a practiced yogi, I highly recommend this one)! Have you already been paddle boarding and want to try something else? Sailboards Miami also offers windsurfing lessons and has kayaks for rent.
(To get to Sailboard Miami, make your first right 1/3 mile after toll plaza and turn left at the water.)
1:30 p.m. / Patagonia
260 Crandon Boulevard, Key Biscayne. Website: patagoniausa.net
After you bring back the boards, pack up, dry off and head further into Key Biscayne to visit this Argentinean café for a well-needed lunch break. It has an assortment of amazing homemade products (including freshly squeezed orange juice – yummy). The empanadas are great and the desserts are amazing (almost all are filled with dulce de leche). Sit, relax, and check out the bottled wine selection before you leave (I recommend the Kaiken Malbec – only $10.99!).
2:30 p.m. / Jimbo’s Shrimp Shack
Duck Lake Road, Virginia Key. Website: jimbosplace.com
Since 1954 ‘Jimbo’ has been squatting on land on Virginia Key and the place has now become a must-see, must-do, Miami staple. Don’t worry, I’m not recommending that you eat here (unless you love pretending to be Anthony Bourdain or believe all of the great reviews). However, I am suggesting you get a beer. They are only $2 and if you get one, you get to see where they keep the beer, which is a very interesting experience. Jimbo’s is an eccentric community and can be fun if you’re up for it. They have a bocce ball court, a TV that works, interesting people and you can follow a trail to the end of Virgina Key where you can look out onto Fischer Island. See if you can find the self-proclaimed PR Director, ‘Hollywood,’ when you’re there. If you get on his good side, he might model for your camera. And they are definitely pictures worth holding onto.
(To get to Jimbo's, once on Rickenbacker Causeway take the first left after the light at Mast Academy. Follow the road northeast, staying to the right at the first fork in the road. When you come to the end of the road, stay to the left. You will see the water treatment plant -- then turn to the right (north) and look for the driveway just ahead on the right.)
3:30 p.m. / Frozen Lemonade
Hobie Beach next to Miami Seaquarium (westbound on Rickenbacker Causeway), Key Biscayne
Before you leave Key Biscayne, swing by Hobie Beach and pick up a frozen lemonade ($4) or ice cream. You’ll need it after walking around Jimbo’s in the Miami heat… and it’s a perfect ending to a day in the sun.
