Get ready to dance as much as you want this weekend
Vagabond, Bardot host dance music events off the beach
You Can Dance If You Want To
While hip hop may be Miami’s unofficial Memorial Day weekend soundtrack, dance music is alive and well from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Saturday, May 26 at The Vagabond, whose Dance Ritual features the legendary Louie Vega. In addition to Vega, the party is hosted by Back Door Bamby’s “notorious sex kittens and naughty misfits,” along with resident DJs Ray Milian, Ryan Evans and Carmel Ophir. Out back in the garden is The Smoke Out BBQ with DJ Wasabi. Tickets are $10 and $15 at www.wantickets.com and include free Absolut Vodka cocktails from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Meanwhile, Over at Bardot
While Vega is spinning at The Vagabond, his partner in sound and in his production/remix company Masters at Work, Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez, will spin his own fusion of house, hip hop, Latin, jazz, funk & soul, reggae, alternative pop and broken beats at Bardot. LA-based band Toy Bombs, whose own signature sounds are inspired by punk, folk, 50s rock and Radiohead, among others, will also perform. Doors open at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 and $15 and available here.
Free Cheers for Thursday
New at Lucky Clover Irish Pub is Cheers, a series of booze-soaked incentives by promoter Gary James beginning at 5 p.m. with happy hour until 9 p.m. and again from 2:30 a.m. until closing and continuing with two for one "Baby Guinness Shots" and $4 Harp beer all night long. Women get free Baby Guinness Shots from 9 p.m. until midnight, during which time those babies become old enough for a stint in juvie. James, incidentally, is a busy guy. Among his other upcoming nocturnal offerings: a Saturday pool party and lounge/dinner party at the Mondrian, a Tuesday dinner /lounge party at the Shelborne, and, starting June 25 and every Monday night thereafter, Postal Cafe upstairs at Sra. Martinez. About that, James tells us a, "it's a progressive international themed night, "kind of like a Fat Black Pussycat but 20 years later and with an adult audience. Think Semper's meets Cafe Manana [a hipster spot on Washington and 16th back in the day]" Sra. Martinez, incidentally, is closed Mondays, and James, along with legendary South Beach nightlife visionary Louis Canales, is just leasing the space from Michelle Bernstein.
Nightlife isn’t regularly associated with intellect, but when it comes to Tuesday night’s Camp Ricochet, your brain is as essential as your outfit. In addition to playing trivia for prizes, the Midtown Miami meeting place is giving away free pizza from 9 p.m. to midnight. “Great date night,” says owner Alan Roth. And while that may be debatable, free pizza and trivia on a Tuesday night isn’t rocket science, but sure is a no brainer.
Memorial Day Weekend in Miami is a who’s who of hip hop royalty. As for where they’re going to be,well, if you believe the promotional flyers, they’ll be everywhere. Don’t believe the hype. Bamboo Miami Beach as an impressive lineup beginning Friday, May 25 with Twista and Don Cannon and continuing Saturday with an exclusive Rick Ross event with music by DJ Sam Sneak, Sunday with the Flo Rida and DJ Entice Celebrity Birthday Bash and crashing Monday with The Annual Memorial Weekend Shutdown with a Jadakiss birthday bash and music by DJ S&S. Doors for all open at 11 p.m. and guests, say a publicist, “should expect a cover of $25+ (depending on capacity and time).
