Funny business at the Arsht
Celebrity Autobiography ribs on celebs
Rachel Dratch’s son Eli is a lucky kid. Just think of all the playmate possibilities. There’s been quite the baby boom among Dratch’s former Saturday Night Live castmates: Tina Fey is pregnant again, so is Maya Rudolph. Amy Poehler has two little boys, one the same age as Eli. The 8-month-old, conceived when the comedian was 43 with businessman boyfriend John Wahl, was a happy accident. “I am 44, I thought, ‘Oh I can’t have kids,’ ’’ she says by phone from NYC, where she is based. The Massachusetts native isn’t one of those sleep-deprived, in-a-haze new mothers. “I’m OK with it,’’ she says. “I’m used to no sleep with my weird showbiz hours.’’
Dratch, who will be at the Arsht Center May 5-8 for the comedy show Celebrity Autobiography, is writing an as-yet-untitled book about her surprise over-40 pregnancy, among other stories. You can bet they’ll be pretty amusing. Speaking of amusing: For her part in Celebrity Autobiography, Dratch will appear with former Sex and the City star Mario Cantone to read “the cheesiest’’ excerpts from memoirs of stars. Think Joan Lunden, Burt Reynolds and his ex-wife Loni Anderson. Even Reynolds’ former secretary Elaine Hall got in on the act, with Burt and Me: My Days and Nights with Burt Reynolds. That tell-all will be up for laugh grabs, too, as well as ones by Madonna, Mr. T and Justin Bieber.
The Arsht comedy series, May 12-15, will also feature appearances by Sharon Gless and Desperate Housewives’ Roger Bart. Dratch, who originated the character of Debbie Downer on SNL (1999-2006) and has costarred in various movies, including such Adam Sandler comedies as I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, Click and Just Go With It, is a full-on working mom. She just taped the 100th episode of 30 Rock and is doing a sketch on pal Jimmy Fallon’s show called The Jersey Floor, a sendup of The Jersey Shore. She was in rehearsals during the interview.
“I’ve been dressed as Snooki during this whole conversation,’’ she reveals. “I’m short and kind of look like her instantly. But mainly it’s all about the wig and the spray tan.’’ Dratch isn’t a fan of the MTV show — or the cast’s six-figure salaries. “After you did your time to get [to the top] and these people are raking it in,’’ she says, “that hurts!’’
