Free and cheap things to do in Miami - Sept. 20-22
Miami on the Cheap has some fun activities in Miami this weekend for those that don't want to go broke.
It’s fall in South Florida, weather notwithstanding, and that means more free and cheap things to do for fun.
You have just over a week to take advantage of Miami Spice dining deals, which end Sept. 30. That’s also the last day to see four attractions for one price with a Summer Savings Pass or take advantage greater Fort Lauderdale’s 2-for-1 Summer Savings deals.
Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for free and cheap weekend fun Sept. 20-22.
DWNTWN Art Days
It’s all art, all the time in downtown Miami this weekend during DWNTWN Art Days Friday through Sunday. More than 125 events, most free, are scheduled at venues stretching from Temple Israel, 137 NE 19th St., south to Mary Brickell Village, 900 S. Miami Ave. Car2Go, the MetroMover and the Art Days Trolley will help art lovers get from one location to another. The hub of the activity, during the day at least, will be at Grand Central Park at Miami Worldcenter,700 N. Miami Ave.
We’ll always have free movies
You’ve got two opportunities to see movies free this weekend. The classic film “Casablanca” will be shown at 8 p.m. Friday at Brickell World Plaza. At Actors Playhouse in Coral Gables, you can see the 1956 film “The Bad Seed” at 11:30 p.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday. While the film is free, you need to get advance tickets online.
Free concerts everywhere
This is a great weekend for free concerts. You’ll have to make some choices. On Friday, night, you can hear Les Freres Dejean & Aroze at the Little Haiti Cultural Center during the monthly free Big Night in Little Haiti celebration from 6 to 10 p.m. Or, hear a concert by Edwin Bonilla and his Latin Jazz All-Star Ensemble with guest performers at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium at 8 p.m. Friday. While the concert is free, you will need an advance ticket. A third choice is Salsa Under the Stars at 9 p.m. at Hialeah Park, featuring the Tito Puente Jr. Orchestra. On Sunday at 7 p.m. Sunday, hear a free jazz concert at the Gusman Concert Hall at the University of Miami.
Free ‘Play Day’ at the Deering Estate
Saturday is the last free “Play Day” this season at the Deering Estate at Cutler. This all-day event honors the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, with free admission, free historic house tours, a scavenger hunt for Florida plants and writing workshops for children.
Free and cheap things to do with kids
Looking for free and cheap stuff to do with the kids this weekend? Miami Children’s Museum is free the third Friday of every month. Plus, admission is $10 for Miami-Dade residents the rest of the days throughout September. If you’re in the mood to share space with parrots, admission to Jungle Island is $15 per person this weekend and next.
