Free and cheap things to do in Miami - Oct. 25-27
Miami on the Cheap has your itinerary for the weekend.
Halloween is upon us, and the festivities start this weekend, with parties and events for both children and the 21-and-older crowd.
Through Oct. 31, you can still take advantage of Miami Attractions Month, which means two admissions for the price of one to 18 South Florida attractions, including Zoo Miami, Jungle Island, the Deering Estate at Cutler, HistoryMiami, the Miami Seaquarium and Vizcaya. To get the deals, you need a printable coupon from the Miami Attractions Month website. Check to make sure the deal is valid the days you want to go.
The pumpkin patch at Miami Lakes United Methodist Church is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, with a craft show, fall festival and free family movie Saturday.
Music bigger than life
The New World Symphony will “Wallcast” its performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday onto the 7,000-square-foot wall outside. Bring a date (or a friend) and a picnic and enjoy the music of Beethoven and Schumann outdoors. Best of all, it’s free.
More outdoor concerts
The monthly Jazz at MOCA features singer-songwriter Maria Alejandra Rodriguez performing at 8 p.m. Friday outside the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami. The museum is open free (or by donation) from 7 to 10 p.m. Starting at 9 p.m. Friday at Hialeah Park, you can hear Cachao’s Mambo All Stars perform during the Salsa Under the Stars series. On Sunday at 2 p.m., Jazz in the Park presents Pamir Guanchez.
Halloween family fun
Those seeking fun with kids have two options on Sunday: IDEA@thebass is featuring a Halloween costume contest during its monthly free family day from 2 to 4 p.m. The Greater Miami Youth Symphony and the Alhambra Orchestra are presenting a free concert, “A Spooky Symphony,” at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Olympia Theater at The Gusman Center for the Performing Arts.
Celebrate Hispanic heritage and culture
The monthly Viernes Culturales/Cultural Friday celebration is 7 to 11 p.m. Friday on Calle Ocho between 15th and 18th avenues. Art, culture, music, dancing and food are all part of the event. Musical performers include Cuban son veterans Vicentico y su Sonera at 7 p.m. and Lucy Grau at 8:30 p.m. Dr. Paul George leads a free historic walking tour starting at 7 p.m. in front of the Tower Theater.
Halloween for adults
Magic City Casino is putting on what it calls the biggest free Halloween party in Miami starting at 8 p.m. Saturday. The event includes a costume contest at 9 p.m. (be there by 8:30 to register). No masks are allowed, but otherwise your imagination is the limit. (If you’re wondering what to wear, we have ideas for 85 cheap and easy Halloween costumes.) You must be 21 to enter.
