Free and cheap things to do in Miami - Nov. 29-Dec. 1
Miami on the Cheap tells us where to invest our weekend dollars.
The turkey is eaten, the family is still in town, and we’re all wondering what we can do for fun this weekend without dipping too far into our holiday shopping budget.
We suggest music, music, music, in all styles. You might want to skip shopping on Black Friday and just spend your day and night at free music events. And where else but in Florida can you see an outdoor movie on the beach during Thanksgiving weekend?
Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for free and cheap weekend fun Oct. Nov. 29-Dec. 1.
Acoustic alternative to shopping.
If shopping till you drop is not your idea of fun, spend Black Friday at the Lumpy Sue Acoustic Musicfest, a traditional all-day event celebrating its 22nd year. Lumpy Sue is part of the “Alice’s Restaurant” story and, yes, that song will be performed. The event starts at 10:30 a.m. with open mike performers, and the headliners will take the stage from noon to 5 p.m. Performers include Jim Camacho, the Sarah Jacob Trio, Jam I Am, the Mann Sisters, Omine Eager, Diane Ward and Jack Shawde and Joel Zoss. Bring blankets and chairs. The event is at Greynolds Park. While admission is free, parking is $6 per car or $15 per truck or RV.
Salsa in the street
You can sashay down from Greynolds Park to Little Havana for the monthly free Viernes Culturales/Cultural Friday extravaganza. From 7 to 11 p.m., music, art and more will be on display on Calle Ocho (Southwest Eighth Street) from 13th to 18th avenues.
