Free and cheap things to do in Miami - Nov. 1-3
Miami on the Cheap lets us know what to do this weekend on a budget.
It’s fall in South Florida, which means outdoor activities are ramping up as the weather gets cool enough for us to enjoy being outside. This weekend brings art walks in four locations, as well as free museum visits, free concerts and free outdoor movies.
Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for free and cheap weekend fun Oct. Nov. 1-3.
Be a culture vulture
If you’re feeling undereducated, this is a good weekend to improve yourself without spending any money. Anyone with a Bank of America or Merrill Lynch debit or credit card can get free admission Saturday or Sunday to five museums in Miami-Dade and three in Broward. If you want to share some culture with the kids, try Friday night’s free monthly planetarium show at the Miami Science Museum or a free first-Saturday-of-the-month visit to the Gold Coast Railroad Museum. The Wolfsonian-FIU is free every Friday night, and the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU is free every Saturday. Admission to the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU is always free.
Celebrate music and great weather
This weekend’s free concerts at Hialeah Park feature Leyla Blue at 9 p.m. Friday for Salsa Under the Stars and Luis Disla at 2 p.m. Sunday for Jazz in the Park. At Hollywood Beach’s theater at Johnson Street and the Broadwalk, you can hear the rock cover band Jack Flash at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Big City Dogs playing rock and blues at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Inside Casino Miami Jai-Alai, you can hear Jenny Love on Friday night and Luis Bofill on Saturday night. The monthly bluegrass jam organized by the South Florida Bluegrass Association is 12:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Greynolds Park, with admission $6 per car.
Films under the stars
You can see free movies outdoors Friday night in downtown Miami or downtown Hollywood. Free Movies on the Plaza presents “The Pianist” at 8 p.m. at Brickell World Plaza. At the downtown Hollywood ArtsPark, this week’s feature is “Frankenweenie.”
Walk, talk, wine, whine
This a great weekend to see art, with two gallery walks on Friday night and two on Saturday night. Gables Gallery Night is the first Friday of every month, and Giralda Under the Stars starts for the season with Giralda Street between Ponce and Galiano closed to traffic for dining and entertainment. Downtown Miami’s First Friday art and fashion event starts at McCormick Place at 6 p.m. On Saturday night, you can choose between the ArtCenter South Florida Studio Crawl on Lincoln Road or the Coconut Grove Gallery Walk.
Outdoor arts festivals return
The South Miami Art Festival kicks off the outdoor arts and crafts festival season this winter, showcasing more than 120 artists along Sunset Drive between U.S. 1 and Red Road. The event also will include kids’ activities, food for sale and entertainment. It’s open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
