Free and cheap things to do in Miami - May 9-11
Miami on the Cheap gives us the scoop on Miami's budget-friendly fun this weekend.
It’s not too late to enjoy an outdoor concert or movie before the summer blanket of heat descends. You might also want to catch the big Wynwood and Design District art walks Saturday night while you can still walk outdoors without ruining your makeup.
May is Miami Museum Month, which means buy one, get one free admission at 24 participating institutions, plus a chance to see all the museums if you buy a membership at one.
Sunday is Mother’s Day, and moms get in free at Bonnet House on Sunday and Butterfly World all weekend, plus get free food and drinks at some South Florida restaurants.
Here are our top picks for free and cheap weekend fun May 9-11.
Hot night of cool jazz
You can go to a free jazz concert Friday night in Miami Gardens at 6:30 p.m. at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex Amphitheater. Performers will be Brenda Alford, a longtime jazz vocalist and Miami-Dade Public Schools teacher, and the Joey Gilmore Blues Band, led by the guitarist and soul-blues singer. The Music in the Park concert series is sponsored by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara Jordan, Miami Gardens council member David Williams Jr. and the Sunshine Jazz organization.
Taste, hear and see Haiti
The Taste of Haiti festival will share music, art and food of Haiti from 3 to 10 p.m. Saturday on the plaza of the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami. The event will include chef competitions in a Haitian version of “Iron Chef,” as four chefs from the Haitian Culinary Alliance compete to prepare the best dish in 45 minutes, sample of Haitian foods and live music and a DJ.
Free classical music new and old
You can hear two styles of classical music in free concerts this weekend. On Saturday at 3 p.m. at the West Kendall Regional Library, electro-acoustic composer Gustavo Matamoros will perform at the monthly new music concert by Kendall Sound Art. On Sunday at 7:30 p.m., the Alhambra Orchestra will perform a program of late Romantic works at Ransom-Everglades Upper School in Coconut Grove. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.
Family day at three museums
Does your kid need culture? Expose him or her to museums in the guise of arts, crafts and fun activities through museum family days, with free afternoon admission for all. Saturday brings three opportunities. From 1 to 4 p.m. at Perez Art Museum Miami, you can discover the “Imagined Landscapes” of Miami artist Edouard Duval-Carrie on exhibit, and the kids will have a chance to create their own imagined landscapes. The Coral Gables Museum, starting at 2 p.m., will teach kids about the Italian sister city of Pavia, organize a scavenger hunt and then present The Musical Miracles from Actors Playhouse at 4 p.m. performing songs from “In the Heights.” At HistoryMiami, it’s Mind Body Green day from 1 to 4 p.m. with yoga workshops, information about healthy foods and eco-friendly crafts.
Two family-friendly free films and one for adults only
This weekend’s free movies are “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” at 7 p.m. Friday at the North Shore Park band shell in Miami Beach or “Smurfs 2” at 8 p.m. Friday at Hollywood Arts Park. The over-21 crowd is invited to a Samuel Adams Brew & View event starting at 6 p.m. Saturday at Bayfront Park, featuring a free screening of “Wedding Crashers” at 8 p.m., as well as music, beer for sale and food trucks. While the event is free, you must RSVP online. ID will be required to enter.
