Free and cheap things to do in Miami - May 23-25
Miami on the Cheap dishes on the free and cheap fun in South Florida this weekend.
It’s Memorial Day weekend, and that means an extra day of fun for most South Floridians.
May is Miami Museum Month, which means buy one, get one free admission at 24 participating institutions, plus a chance to see all the museums if you buy a membership at one. If you’d like to see more museums, The Wolfsonian-FIU is free every Friday night, and admission to the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU is free every Saturday. The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU is always free.

Concert of patriotic music and more
The Alhambra Orchestra, Miami’s community ensemble, will perform a concert titled “Memorable Medley” at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Pinecrest Gardens. The multicultural program will include including Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Latin favorites, patriotic standards, music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Henry Mancini, and a Paganini work performed Caribbean-style. The orchestra will be conducted by Peter Fuchs and feature pianist Mia Vassilev and steel pan virtuoso Kelly Assam. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Parking is free.
See PAMM free Monday if you use Metromover
The Perez Art Museum Miami will offer free admission on Monday to anyone who arrives by Metromover. PAMM staffers will be handing out free entry passes at the Museum Park station. Once you’ve at the museum, you can join a free tour of the “Americana” exhibition at 11:30 a.m. or the “Caribbean: Crossroads of the World” exhibition at 3 p.m.
Explore the murals of Wynwood
Artist Ryan Ferrell (known as Ryan the Wheelbarrow) leads free bicycle tours of the murals of Wynwood at noon Fridays and Saturdays and 6 p.m. Sundays. Bring your own bike, and meet at the corner of 24th Street and Northwest Second Avenue, near Panther Coffee. Tours last about 90 minutes.
Summer Savings deals in Broward
Summer is a great time to explore Broward at a discount. The Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau has a whole bunch of offers on its website for 2-for-1 admission to such attractions as the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, the Museum of Discovery and Science, Butterfly World, Flamingo Gardens and lots of water activities. You can get a printable coupon at www.sunny.org. The promotion last through September.
Put down that video game!
Take your couch potato kids to Key Biscayne on Saturday for Fit Kids Day, which is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Village Green North. The kids will have the chance to learn about fitness and healthy eating, plus have a chance to play soccer, street hockey and tennis.
