Free and cheap things to do in Miami - May 2-4
Miami on the Cheap gives us the scoop on the budget-friendly fun to be head in Miami this weekend.
Feeling cultured? If not, you’ve got a chance to change that this weekend, with free visits to museums, classical music at the last Soundscape Wallcast of the season and lots of art walks.
May is Miami Museum Month, which means buy one, get one free admission at 24 participating institutions, plus a chance to see all the museums if you buy a membership at one.
On the other hand, perhaps you’d rather join the monthly Bluegrass Jam from 12:50 to 5 p.m. Sunday in Greynolds Park or the monthly Suntrust Sunday Jazz Brunch along the Riverwalk in Fort Lauderdale. You’ve also got the chance to attend festivals celebrating Haitian culture, fit kids and medieval Spain. South Florida is nothing if not diverse, even in its free entertainment.
Here are our top picks for free and cheap weekend fun May 2-4.
The New World Symphony’s last concert of the season will feature maestro Michael Tilson Thomas conducting Mahler’s Seventh Symphony. You can’t buy tickets to Saturday night’s performance inside (it’s sold out), but you can watch it free outside on the 7,000-square-foot Soundscape screen. The event is at 8 p.m.
Leap tall flights of fancy without spending a dime
Saturday is Free Comic Book Day, and that means you can get a free comic book from participating shops. You can choose from more than 50 titles, though you may not find all titles in all stores. Some stores also are planning special events. Three stores in Miami-Dade and give in Broward are on the list of participants.
Free visits to museums

In Broward, the program includes the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Discovery and Science, the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale and the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum. And, the Gold Coast Railroad Museum offers free admission the first Saturday of every month. Friday nights are always free at The Wolfsonian, and Saturdays are always free at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU. Admission is free every day at the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU.
Walk, talk, wine, whine and look at art
You can join art walks all over Miami-Dade this weekend.
