Free and cheap things to do in Miami - March 21-23
Miami on the Cheap dishes on the budget-friendly fun in South Florida this weekend.
This is another great spring weekend that will call for hard choices as you choose which free movies, concerts and other events to attend.
If you’re going to the Miami-Dade Youth Fair, be sure to check the website for discounts and coupons before you go.
Farmers’ markets are in full swing all over South Florida.
Friday night brings the monthly Target Free Third Friday activities and free admission to the Miami Children’s Museum from 3 to 9 p.m.
Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for free and cheap weekend fun March 21-23:
Free Big Night in Little Haiti
The monthly Big Night in Little Haiti event features a performance by Loray Mistik, a Haitian rasin (roots) group that mixes traditional Haitian rhythms with West African percussion, soukous, blues and hip-hop. The band Kazoots will open. The free event, from 6 to 10 p.m., also will include art, arts and crafts for kids and food vendors. It’s at the Little Haiti Cultural Center, 212 NE 59 Terrace, Miami.
Free opera in the park
The Miami Lyric Opera will give a free performance of the opera “L’amico Fritz” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the North Shore Park Band Shell. The opera, by Pietro Mascagni, is a love story about a rich land owner, the daughter of a tenant and the rabbi who acts as matchmaker. It’s in Italian. The opera is part of Miami Beach’s Arts in the Parks series.
Free Shostakovich at Soundscape
This month's free New World Symphony Wallcast will feature Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony, evoking the years after World War II. Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado will conduct the work, which will feature the NWS debut of Argentine cellist Sol Gabetta. You can watch it all free on a 7,000-square-foot wall starting at 8 p.m. Saturday.
Celebrate Spring Japanese-style in Miami Beach
The Miami Beach Botanical Garden will celebrate the season and its Japanese garden with a free Japanese Spring Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The event will include Japanese-themed activities, food, taiko drumming performances and a class in Ikebana flower arranging.
Free movies and more free movies
This week’s selection of free movies includes a number of family-friendly flicks. Friday night brings “42” at 7 p.m. at the North Shore Park Bandshell in Miami Beach; “Shrek” at 8 p.m. at Hollywood Arts Park; “Despicable Me 2,” at Mother of Christ Catholic Church in West Kendall; and “Ice Age 4: Continental Drift” at Harris Field in Homestead. On Saturday, see a free screening of “The Darjeeling Limited,” part of the Big Reed event, at 1 p.m. at the O Cinema in Wynwood. The first 50 moviegoers will receive a free copy of the book “The Namesake.”
