Free and cheap things to do in Miami - June 7-9
Miami on the Cheap gives us the scoop on what's free and cheap in Miami this weekend.
As we move into summer, the free outdoor movies are ending but we’re not ready to spend all our times indoors yet.
We’ve got the opportunity for indoor-outdoor browsing this weekend with three art walks. A deal at Jungle Island may pull you outdoors, while free museum events say come inside.

Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for free and cheap weekend fun June 7-9.
Jingle in the Jungle
If you have a teacher among your family and friends, you may want to bring her an apple in hopes she’ll take you to Jungle Island. Teachers with ID who visit Jungle Island Friday through Sunday will get a free annual pass, good for unlimited visits for the next year. Friends and family who come along (up to six per teacher) will get 50% off admission and can upgrade to an annual pass for an additional $10 each.
Art, wine, walk, talk
Two major art walks are this weekend: Coral Gables Gallery Night is 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, with free trolley transportation between galleries. Downtown Miami also has a free Friday night art walk, its last until September. The big art walks in Wynwood and the Design District are Saturday night, with the food trucks at the Wynwood walk.
Free films: Gracias, merci
The film organization Red Chemistry, in partnership with a number of South Florida cultural organizations, is presenting a free screening at 8 p.m. Friday of short films from the “Escuela de Cine de Madrid (ECAM)” at the Centro Cultural Espanol, 1490 Biscayne Blvd., Miami. Next Friday, the organizations will do a free screening of Spanish and French short films at 6:30 p.m. at the Key Biscayne Community Center.
Look at the stars and celebrate Florida
Two museums have their monthly free days this weekend. The Miami Science Museum celebrates Fabulous First Fridays with a free planetarium show at 7 p.m. On Saturday, from noon to 5 p.m., HistoryMiami will offer free admission and its monthly Family Fun Day. This month’s activities will celebrate Florida’s 500th birthday.
The newest sounds I’ve ever heard
Kendall Sound Art, which celebrates and performs new music, will debut a new piece for cello, flute and piano at the monthly free concert at the West Kendall Regional Library at 3 p.m. Saturday. The piece was composed by Lajos Zeke, a professor of musicology, at the New World School of the Arts. The work is titled “Aldulindale,” which is “High Elvish” (from J.R.R. Tolkien) for “Song of Two Trees.”
