Free and cheap things to do in Miami - July 19-21
Miami on the Cheap tells us what to do on a budget in Miami this weekend.
Will it be indoor or outdoor activities this weekend?
We’ll share some of both, since these days who knows what the weather will do?
Saturday night is the free monthly art walk in the Bird Road Arts District. It’s also the monthly Magic City Casino Wheelin’ Dealin’ Street Food Festival food truck roundup from 5 to 10 p.m. Bacon will play the starring role.
Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for free and cheap weekend fun July 19-21.
Big Night in Little Haiti
Friday night is the free Big Night in Little Haiti festival, with entertainment, art, food and activities for the kids from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Little Haiti Cultural Center. Tabou Combo, the kings of konpa, is the lead musical act. In the gallery, Luis Olazabal will exhibit his photos of the first two years of Big Night in Little Haiti.
‘Grease’ is the word (and the film)
Watch a free film and sing along (you know the words) when “Grease” is shown on the very big screen at Brickell World Plaza. The free film is presented at 8 p.m. Friday, part of a monthly series. You can bring your own snacks and drinks, but no glass containers.
P.L.A.Y. free at the Deering Estate
Saturday is one of three free “P.L.A.Y.” -- Preservation, Learning, Adventure, Year-Round – days this summer and fall at the Deering Estate at Cutler. The event will include free admission all day, tours of the historic house, a birthday party for Charles Deering, and shorts excerpts from “Romeo and Juliet” by Tandem Theatre Project Performance at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Russian songs, dance, stories and more
Young performers from St. Petersburg, Russia, will present an event of music, dance, folk tales, comedy and more at 7 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church of South Miami. The family-friendly event will include some audience participation, so don’t be shy. While there is no admission charge, donations are welcome.
A day at the opera
The Riuniti Opera and the Alhambra Orchestra will present a free family-friendly performance of scenes and songs from “The Tales of Hoffman” at 4 p.m. Sunday at Temple Beth Am, 5950 North Kendall Drive, Miami. The Alhambra Orchestra is a community orchestra made up of 60 South Florida musicians.
