Free and cheap things to do in Miami - Jan. 17-19
Miami on the Cheap has your best bets for free and cheap fun in South Florida.
As winter bears down upon South Florida, we’re facing a weekend that may require us to wear sweaters to enjoy some great outdoor events. But South Floridians can handle it. If you need a sweater on the cheap, drop by the nearest thrift store.
Saturday brings the regular monthly art walk in the Bird Road Art District, and we’ve got free outdoor movies Friday night at Westwind Lakes Park to the southwest and the North Shore Bandshell to the northeast, as well as at Hollywood Arts Park. Entry is free to all U.S. national parks on Monday, including Everglades National Park.
Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for free and cheap weekend fun Jan. 17-19.
Art Deco Weekend
Art Deco Weekend is Friday through Sunday in South Beach, with a street festival, vintage items for sale, autos or display and a celebration of the neighborhood’s historic architecture. The event will include a free film series in two locations and free concerts in the evenings on two stages. Most of the action will be on Ocean Drive, between Fifth and 14th streets.
Free classical music at Miami-Dade and Broward
The Chopin Foundation will present free piano concerts this weekend as part of the Chopin for All series. Featured pianist will be Conlan Miller, who won the MTNA Piano Performance Competition in 2013, playing pieces by Chopin as well as Bach, Lizst and Ravel. The concerts will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Broward County Main Library and at 3 p.m. Sunday at Granada Presbyterian Church in Coral Gables.
Beaux Arts Festival of Art
The 63rd annual Beaux Arts Festival of Art will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the University of Miami in Coral Gables. More than 220 artist and artisans will display and sell their work, and there will be live music, children’s activities and food for sale. Admission to the Lowe Art Museum will be free during the event.
Mantrap brings disco to Tropical Nights
The Miami-Dade Parks’ free “Noches Tropicales/Tropical Nights” music series features Mantrap in a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Country Village Park. Mantrap has been around since the early 1970s, when a group of Miami High students began performing at “open house” dance events. The group has been sharing music throughout South Florida ever since.
Big Night in Little Haiti
The monthly Big Night in Little Haiti celebration will feature a concert by Djakout #1, a top konpa band from Haiti. Pouvwa will open. The event also includes children’s activities, art, crafts and food vendors. It’s 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday at the Little Haiti Cultural Center in Miami.
