Free and cheap things to do in Miami - Jan. 11-13
Miami on the Cheap has the top events this weekend for those who are watching their budgets.
We’re heading toward the peak South Florida season for entertainment and outdoor events, and many of those are cheap or free. If it rains this weekend, we’ve also got free indoor events at cinemas, museums and concert halls.
Saturday brings the regular monthly art walks in Wynwood, the Design District and downtown South Miami.
Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for free and cheap weekend fun Jan. 10-12.
Free & cheap Friday night films
Friday night is free and cheap movie night for South Florida families. The Miami Beach Department of Parks and Recreation will show "Goonies" at 7 p.m. at the North Shore Park Bandshell. At Hollywood ArtsPark, you can see "Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure" at 8 p.m. At Weston Regional Park, it’s “Despicable Me 2” at 7:30 p.m. All three events are free. In Pinecrest, it’s $5 Family Movie Night, featuring “Happily N’ Ever After” at 8 p.m., with a flashlight tour of the park starting at 7:15.
Free family days at three museums Saturday
The new Perez Art Museum Miami offers free admission all day the second Saturday of every month, with special kids’ activities from 1 to 4 p.m., This Saturday, there will be a family-friendly tour of photo exhibits starting at 2 p.m. and a chance to discover the magic of cyanotypes, an early photographic process also known as sunprints. The monthly free day at HistoryMiami is 1 to 4 p.m., with activities focusing on high school sports and healthy cooking. The Coral Gables Museum is open free from 2 to 5 p.m. as part of Family Day on Aragon. Activities will include a scavenger hunt, a tour of the exhibit about Coral Gables Elementary School and a musical performance by members of Orchestra Miami.
Free admission to Pinecrest Gardens for arts festival
Pinecrest Gardens will present the South Motors Fine Arts Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the gardens is free for the event. In addition to looking at art by 65 exhibitors, visitors can explore 14 acres of wetlands, tropical hardwood hammock and native cypress. There will also be activities for kids and food for sale.
Free freestyle with Trinere
Miami freestyle maven Trinere will perform a free concert Saturday night at the Magic City Casino. Joining her will be the Cover Girls, a New York freestyle group that topped the charts in the late ’80s and early ’90s. The performance starts at 9 p.m., and you must be 21 to attend.
Really big toy trucks
A Big Toy Extravaganza Saturday in Coral Gables will let kids explore some really big trucks, specialized vehicles and cars. The event is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Merrick Park and also will include food trucks, face painting, arts and crafts, and inflatable rides and slides.
