Free and cheap things to do in Miami - Feb. 21-23
Miami on the Cheap dishes on the budget-friendly fun going on in South Florida this weekend.
It’s the time of year when even the South Beach traffic can’t mar the joy of being in South Florida. The weather is glorious, and there are so many fun things to do we can’t find enough hours in the day.
For those of us who aren’t made of money, it’s the prime time of year to enjoy free outdoor movies and free outdoor concerts.
Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for free and cheap weekend fun Feb. 21-23:
Mambo with piano and percussion
Percussionist Tito Puente Jr. and composer/producer/pianist Marlow Rosado will perform a free concert at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Exostage at Miami Beach SoundScape as part of the Miami Beach Arts in the Parks series. Puente Jr. is the son of the mambo musician of the same name, and Rosado produces and compose reggaeton, bachata, salsa, merengue and hip-hop. Be ready to dance.
Free Big Night in Little Haiti
Big Night in Little Haiti takes place on the third Friday of the month, with music, children’s activities, art, crafts and food vendors from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Little Haiti Cultural Center. This weekend’s headliner is singer Alan Cavé, known for his work as lead singer with Zin, but appearing with his own band. Tradisyon Lakou Lakay, Little Haiti Cultural Center’s resident percussion and dance ensemble, will be the opening act.
The play’s the thing (and it’s free)
Students and faculty from Miami Dade College’s Kendall campus are presenting a series of free On Stage performances this spring. This weekend and next, you can see the play “Shakespeare-Women-Love,” directed by professor Deborah Mello, at MDC Kendall’s Studio Theater, room M113. The play will be performed at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (and Feb. 27-28) and 2 p.m. Sunday.
Free movies under the stars
We’ve got four opportunities to see free outdoor movies Friday night: “The Little Mermaid” (plus food trucks and kids’ activities) starting at 6 p.m. at Westwind Lakes Park; “Up” (plus free popcorn and food trucks) starting at 6:30 p.m. at North Trail Park; “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” at 7 p.m. at the North Shore Park Band Shell in Miami Beach; and “Remember the Titans” at 8 p.m. at Hollywood Arts Park.
Create your own art at The Bass Museum
Sunday is the free IDEA@thebass family day with free admission for all from 2 to 4 p.m., and special projects for kids at the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach. This month’s theme is “Optical Illusions.”
