Free and cheap things to do in Miami - Aug. 30-Sept. 1
Miami on the Cheap gives us the goods on how to have fun in Miami on a budget.
It’s Labor Day weekend, which means one more to take advantage of all the fun South Florida has to offer. If you want to keep your money in your wallet, stay away from those Labor Day sales and go to a free concert, movie or festival.
You can attend a free Jazz at MOCA concert Friday night at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami or dance to the Latin beat at Viernes Culturales in Little Havana, also on Friday. The monthly Bluegrass Jam is Sunday in Greynolds Park. Miami Spice dining deals continue, with a chance to try some of Miami’s top restaurants at a discount. You can also get $99 spa treatments as part of Miami Spa Month through Aug. 31.

Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for free and cheap weekend fun Aug. 30-Sept. 1.
Cue the scary music
Actors Playhouse in Coral Gables kicks off a new free movie series this weekend with a nostalgic showing of the “Jaws” at the Miracle Theatre, where the film made its local debut in 1975. The film will be screened twice free, at 11:30 p.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday. While the film screenings are free, you will need to get advance tickets here.
Come on into the water!
Movie lovers won’t have to worry about sharks at Grapeland Water Park, which is presenting its popular $5 dive-in movie Friday night. This month’s film is “The Avengers.” The park drops the admission fee to $5 at 5:30 p.m., and kids can play on the water slides until 7:30 p.m., when everyone moves into the big pool for the film, which starts at 8 p.m.
Everybody Wang Chung Tonight
The British New Wave band Wang Chung is presenting a free concert at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Stage 305 at the Magic City Casino. You don’t have to be old enough to remember the band’s 1986 hit “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” to attend, but you do have to be 21. You can also hear local bands for free Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Casino Miami Jai-Alai.
It’s a Jungle out there
Jungle Island is offering “Nabor Day” discounts this weekend starting at $10 for general admission Saturday, Sunday and Monday. But if you want the deal, as well as some package discounts that include meals and other perks, you have to buy advance tickets online. The general admission price will be $15 per person at the door.
Salsa and jazz with flamingoes
Hialeah Park has reopened as a casino, and two free concert series start this weekend. Salsa Under the Stars will be 9 p.m. to 1 p.m. every Friday night, starting with Hansel y Raul. Jazz in the Park will be 2 to 5 p.m. every Sunday, with Joe Donato kicking off the series.
