Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for free and cheap weekend fun Aug. 23-25.
4 attractions, 3 counties, 1 price
Summer may be over, but you still have time to make use of a Summer Savings Pass. For $55 ($45 for kids 3 to 12), you can visit Zoo Miami, the Miami Seaquarium, Lion Country Safari in Palm Beach County and the Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale. The pass is good through Sept. 30, so visit one attraction per weekend.
Free music, skip the slots
Casino Miami Jai-Alai has free concerts most weekends, no gambling required, though you must be 21. This weekend’s performers are the Bochinche Group from 8 p.m. to midnight Thursday, The Divas All Star Band from 9 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. and Luis Bofill, form 9 p.m. Saturday to 1a.m.
Fun and info for children
If you’re looking for resources for parents and children, from after-school care to health insurance, you can find it from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the free Family Expo organized by the Children’s Trust at the Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition Center. You can bring said children with you, to participate in face-painting, a bounce house, entertainment, visits with cartoon characters and more. If that’s not enough fun, take your crafty youngsters to the Bass Museum of Art for IDEA@thebass from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, where they can participate in arts and crafts. Museum admission is free for all during those hours.
Yes, it’s hot outside, but it’s free (or cheap)
The U.S. National Parks Service is celebrating its 97th anniversary with free admission Sunday to all national parks, including Everglades National Park and Dry Tortugas National Park, off Key West. If you think it’s a bit too hot for the Everglades, you can go any time to Biscayne National Park, which is always free. Fairchild Tropical Garden also wants to lure you outside with a deal, with admission just $7.50 every Sunday in August.
How does your garden grow?
If you’re not sure, take part in one of the free gardening workshops put on by the Miami-Dade Extension Service at Miami-Dade public libraries. At 10:30 a.m. Saturday, you can learn about Florida-friendly veggies and herbs at the South Dade Regional Library. At 4:30 p.m. Saturday, the topic is butterfly gardening, at the Kendale Lakes Branch.
