Free and cheap things to do in Miami - April 18-20
Miami on the Cheap has the scoop on the free and cheap fun in South Florida this weekend.
It’s Easter weekend and also Earth Day on Sunday, with plenty of chances to celebrate the two together with outdoor events. Easter egg hunts will be the order of the day both Saturday and Sunday. You can find a list of free egg hunts here.
The O, Miami poetry festival continues, with readings, yoga, poetry, karaoke and other literary events nearly every day, most of them free. The Bird Road Art Walk is 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, and the Miami Children’s Museum hosts its regular monthly free Friday evening.

Big Night in Little Haiti anniversary party
Big Night in Little Haiti, the monthly celebration of music and art, is celebrating its third anniversary Friday. The featured act will be Rara Kuyu and his 15-member Universal Soul Love group of musicians and dancers. Kuyu, who was there to launch the first event, is also a painter and muralist. Also performing will be DJA-Rara, a traditional Haitian processional band. The Oscar Thomas Foundation Exhibit will be featured in the gallery, and there will also be children’s arts and crafts and food vendors. Big Night in Little Haiti is 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Little Haiti Cultural Center.
Free all-day Sweatstock Music Festival
Sweat Records is celebrating its eighth anniversary with the annual all-day Sweatstock Music Festival, a free all-ages music event. The event coincides with Record Store Day, which begins at 9 a.m. The music festival starts at 2 p.m. in the Sweat parking lot and at Churchill’s Pub, and at 11 p.m. all the action moves to Churchill’s. The event includes DJs, food trucks, giveaways, comedy, films and more.
Three free and one cheap movie
This weekend’s free movies are “The Perfect Game” at 7 p.m. Friday at the North Shore Park band shell in Miami Beach; “Epic” at 8 p.m. Friday at Hollywood Arts Park; and “Midnight in Paris” at 8 p.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday at Actors Playhouse in Coral Gables. For $5, you can participate in Cult Movie Night at Pinecrest Gardens on Friday. The night begins with happy hour at 6:30 p.m. and the movie, “National Lampoon’s Animal House,” at 8 p.m.
A ‘club’ you can afford to visit
The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center is presenting Black Creek Nights, with local artists playing in a club setting. Host of the series is Mr. Pauer, a Latin Grammy-nominated producer and re-mixer. The event starts at 8 p.m. Friday, with music by Suenalo and Xperimento. Tickets are $10 in advance or at the door.
Earth Day free events
What better way to celebrate Earth Day than to spend time with nature? Entry to U.S. national parks is free Saturday and Sunday, and that includes Everglades National Park and Dry Tortugas National Park off Key West. You can also celebrate Earth Day at Miami Beach Botanical Garden, which plans free events all weekend. Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., see sculptures and other art made from repurposed materials, watch short environmental films and let the kids do arts and crafts. At 7 p.m., there is a Garden Gathering with music, food vendors, art and a special drum circle performance. Attendees are encouraged to wear anything that glows or shines. On Sunday from1 p.m. to sundown, the garden is presenting “Frozen Music: Picnic 4,” a unique musical event by sound artists David Dunn, Rene Barge and Gustavo Matamoros.
