Free and cheap things to do in Miami - April 12-14
Miami on the Cheap gives a report on this weekend's free and cheap activities around Miami and Miami Beach.
The season isn’t over yet, and the weather still nice enough to enjoy outdoor activities – which are even more fun if they’re free.
It’s National Poetry Month, which means lots of free events as part of the O, Miami poetry festival, including free poetry-writing workshops in English, Spanish and Creole this weekend. And it’s Miami Golf Month, which means special deals at local golf courses. Maybe you can compose a poem while you’re on the golf course. That’s so Miami.

Here are Miami on the Cheap’s top picks for free and cheap weekend fun April 12-14.
Movies for children and adults
If you like movies on the cheap, you’re in luck. You can see Disney’s “Brave” for $5 at Pinecrest Gardens Family Movie Night or take the kids to a free outdoor screening of Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax” at the North Shore Park Bandshell in Miami Beach, both on Friday. The Coral Gables Art Cinema is showing the animated film “The Tale of Despereaux” on Saturday and Sunday morning for $5 each as part of Family Day on Aragon.
Adults have a chance to see a free documentary film at Sweat Records on Friday, “Last Shop Standing: The Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of the Independent Record Shop.”
Lots of walking, lots of art
Two major art walks are happening Saturday night, the Wynwood Art Walk and the Miami Design District Art + Design walk. If you haven’t been to Wynwood lately, you’ll be surprised at all the new restaurants and galleries as well as the murals along the art walk route.
Free family fun at museums
You’ve got a chance to see four museums free this weekend and participate in special family activities. On Friday night, you can see a free Planetarium show at the Miami Science Museum, which is doing its usual first Friday event on the second Friday.
Saturday brings the monthly free Family Fun Day at HistoryMiami. This week’s activities will focus on teens and social media, but you also can take advantage of the free admission to see the exhibits.
It’s the free second Saturday at MAM, with an afternoon of art-related activities for kids and a chance to see the exhibits at the Miami Art Museum.
Plus, every Friday evening is free at the Wolfsonian-FIU in Miami Beach. The event includes a free guided tour at 6 p.m., plus 2-for-1 beer, wine and sangria in the café from 6 to 8 p.m. FIU’s jazz combo is performing this Friday.
We’re with the band
Members of the Greater Miami Symphonic Band will perform classical, jazz and modern music in a free concert Sunday afternoon in Pinecrest.
Rock ‘n’ roll all day
You can listen to free music all day and all evening Sunday at A Day at the Beach at the North Shore Park Bandshell in Miami Beach. Performers include E|P, Elsten Torres, Cleaveland Jones, Electric Piquete, School of Rock Miami and Mr. Itagui from Locos Por Juana as DJ.
