Not sure what to do this weekend at Miami Book Fair International? Here are some suggestions:
Literary Death Match
Drinks and books go together like... well, two things that go really well together. Watch authors Kevin Barry, Lauren Oliver, J.J. Colagrande and Lucy Knisley battle it out rap-style for the Death Match Crown before a panel of judges (Daniel Alarcon, Meg Cabot and Albert “Prodigy” Johnson). Arrive between 6-7 p.m., get in free and enjoy a Happy Hour with The Bookleggers’ pop-up library and trade, donate or buy a book for two bucks. First-timers get a free book. Free Zacapa drinks from 6-7 p.m.
6-10 p.m.Friday, Bardot Lounge, 3456 N. Miami Ave.; $10, cash only at the door.
The Rock Bottom Remainders Reunion
You thought they were gone. You may have even hoped they were gone. But they’re back. The Band Formerly Known as the Remainders — Dave Barry, Mitch Albom, Amy Tan, Scott Turow, Ridley Pearson, Sam Barry, Greg Iles, James McBride and friends — performs at 6 p.m. on the World Stage, this time with an actual musician: Hall of Fame inductee Roger McGuinn. The gang will also talk about their blockbuster book Hard Listening: The Greatest Rock Band Ever (for Authors) at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Chapman Conference Center.
Comics creators are everywhere at the fair, but we have our eye on two intriguing events: Diane Noomin, Ariel Schrag, Vanessa Davis, Miriam Katin and Michael Kaminer, whose work is displayed in “Graphic Details: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women”, an exhibit that will run through Feb. 14 at the Jewish Museum of Florida; they’ll speak at 12:30 p.m. Sunday in Centre Gallery. Also in the Gallery at 4:30 p.m. Sunday: local hero Andrew Kaufman gets streetwise with I’m in Miami, Bitch!: Street Art of Wynwood.
Northeast Fourth Street east of First Avenue.
The fair boasts two solid days of events Saturday and Sunday for foodies, but our favorite is a cooking demonstration by the great Patricia Wells, author of The French Kitchen Cookbook: Recipes and Lessons from Paris and Provence. Tickets $15. Make some coq au vin for me.
All this literary furor got you inspired? Make your own contribution to the fair by writing part of El mundo, un poema gigante (that’s “longest poem” if your Spanish is rusty). The meters-long roll of paper stretches outside the Spain Pavilion, but you can add your own creative works in whatever language you choose.
