If you're cool enough (or more importantly, old enough) to remember the band Fishbone from the '80s, this weekend's events might pique your interest. The L.A. punk-funk-soul-ska rockers - who trashed and smashed musical barriers including race, politics and just plain goofiness - perform Friday night as part of the stellar lineup at the Virginia Key Grassroots Festival, which runs from Thursday through Sunday at the Virginia Key Beach Park. Other headlining acts include Chaka Khan, Arrested Development, the Del McCoury Band, Mishka, Donna the Buffalo and many more.
Fishbone isn't appearing just as a nostalgic act - the group takes the stage in support of its new album, "Crazy Glue," its first in five years, with singles such as "Flutterbutter" and "Weed, Beer, Cigarettes," song titles that clue you in to the band's uniquely twisted musical mission.
If you haven't heard Fishbone's music, but are curious, check out the documentary "Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone," directed by Lev Anderson and Chris Metzler and narrated by actor Laurence Fishburne. The film - which includes commentary from musical icons including Flea, Ice-T, Gwen Stefani, Perry Farrell, Branford Marsalis and George Clinton - runs from Thursday through Sunday at the O Cinema, 90 NW 29th St., Miami; www.o-cinema.org.
