A saunter through any one of eyewear designer Edward Beiner’s boutiques tells an eye-catching story: The local prides himself on procuring eyewear from unique and special corners of the world for the past 31 years. We chat up the Miamian-by-way-of-Brazil on his spec-tacular business.  

You see yourself as a curator of eyewear. How would you best describe this title? I’m always looking for special eyewear that is not part of the masstige market. I search for products that are original, authentic and innovative.

Alongside de rigueur designers such as Oliver Peoples, The Row, Dries Van Noten, Chanel, Cartier, Cazal and Dita, customers will find your eponymous collection. What inspires your creations? My eyewear designs are inspired by my passion for eyewear and the colors of nature in Miami — sea, sand, palm trees and mojitos.  

You opened your first store in South Miami in 1981 and now have 10 Florida stores, to what do you attribute your success? Adaptability and flexibility to an ever-changing fashion and economic environment.  

Where do you make your line of eyewear? In the beautiful Alpine mountains of the Jura in France.

What is the biggest eyewear trend for Spring 2012? Large and larger frame sizes.

Which other eyewear designers are experiencing eyewear gold right now? Cartier at the luxury end, Dita at the fashion end and Super as your beach eyewear.  

What makes your designs so exceptional? Love, passion and desire for perfection with a swirl of great colors and shapes.  

If you weren't in the eyewear realm, what would plan B be for you? I would love to have owned a special car repair garage for pre-1970 collectible automobiles.  

What is Miami's best-kept secret? Canoeing in the moonlight from Deering Estate to the Biscayne islands for a picnic.
