DJ Eric Prydz, one of the most successful DJs in the world, is known for his incredible beats and immaculate taste in music. Pryda Friends, a sub-label of his own record label Pryda Recordings featuring his close friends and colleagues, is touring across the country with DJs Jeremy Olander and Fehrplay with a stop at Miami’s legendary Club Space on August 10. We spoke with DJ Jeremy Olander about working with Eric Prydz, what inspires him and what can we expect at his performance.

How did you get into music?

I’ve always been obsessed with music even since I was really young. I didn’t think I had the confidence to be able to make a living out of it. So it was so difficult to learn instruments and I always gave up. I tried playing guitar and piano but it took too long and I got bored with it. I became this huge computer geek when I was younger and my friend showed me this program where you could create music on your computer and I could combine [music and technology]. I felt like I got a lot more confidence about music.

What’s it like working with Eric Prydz?

It’s a huge honor, to be honest. He’s one of the big [DJs] to me and a lot of other people as well. Him being a huge inspiration to me, it’s just pretty mind-blowing to work with your idol in that kind of way. He’s also such a nice guy, he’s a really humble, down to earth kind of guy. I could ask him about anything. It’s just great. Him being Swedish [like myself] is good too.

How would you describe your sound to people unfamiliar with your music?

It’s pretty progressive, it keeps building and building. I like to put on a mysterious vibe and have it be groovy as well. That’s the best way to put it.

What’s inspiring you at the moment?

I think just hanging out with my family and friends, life in general. It’s so hard to pinpoint what it is that inspires me. I try to read as much as I can. I listen to all my favorite artists, study them, see what they’ve done and try to make use of that. What’s on your playlist? I’ve been listening a lot of 60’s and 70’s Motown records. [Artists like] Otis Redding, Jimmy Ruffin, Smokey Robinson, all those guys.

What should we expect from your show at Club Space?

I’ve got lots of new music to try out. Space is known for going on really early in into the morning, so I’m going to try to play as long as possible and take people on a great journey. I think taking people on journeys is one of the keys of one of my sets. I don’t want to have the same kind of mood through the whole set. I want to change the mood and build, take it down here, bring it up again, change it up a little so it’s not the same thing over and over again.

What do you like about Miami?

I love Miami. The whole unique architecture; if you see a picture from Miami, you can see straight away that it’s Miami. You’ve got the sun, the weather, the beautiful beaches. And you have this whole melting pot of Latin American culture. All of that brings a really unique life to the city, which I think is great.

What should we expect from you in the future?

I just finished this new release that’s coming out soon on Pryda Friends. It’s a more of accessible kind of track. After this record release, I’ll experiment maybe try some new sounds. Also, I have this alias Dhillon, which is more of a techno kind of thing, not that melodic, which I will probably be working on some stuff as well.
