DJ Irie Weekend 2013 gets ready for ninth year on Miami Beach
Golf, bowling highlight annual charity event
Not quite ready to put a cork in celebrating the mighty Miami Heat’s second-consecutive NBA championship? You’re in luck, as DJ Irie – the team’s official DJ – has big plans for the weekend to keep the good times rolling, and you’re invited.
The ninth-annual Irie Weekend - a star-studded series of charity events featuring current Heat players, other pro athletes, actors, supermodels and musicians – hits town for two days of light-hearted antics. The invited guest list includes Jamie Foxx, Wilmer Valderrama, Pitbull, Michael Strahan, Nicole Murphy, Chris Kirkpatrick, Jonathan Vilma, Kevin Dillon, Dwight Stephenson, Patrick Peterson, Jarrett Jack, Clinton Portis, KiJana Carter, Leonard Hankerson, Brian Robiskie, Mike Sims-Walker, Eddie Jones and more.
“It’s a little shindig that we do this time of year, and it’s a huge blessing to even be able to do this,” says Irie. “I wanted to take things further in what I was doing in terms of my activism in the community, because of guys like Jason Taylor and Alonzo Mourning working with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Make a Wish, Special Olympics, etc. etc. I got to see first-hand things that were happening in our inner cities and things that were affecting our at-risk youths. So I wanted to step up and make a difference.”
The fun kicks off at noon Friday with a celebrity golf tournament at the Miami Beach Golf Club (2301 Alton Rd.), and no, you don’t have to know your way around the links to participate and have a great time.
“We’re not playing for a million-dollar purse or anything, but we do want to have fun,” says Irie, “so we have bars at some of the holes, and we have DJ booths out there – we have all kinds of things out there to make sure you have a good time.”
One of the best ways to enjoy the event is to take advantage of the Target Hospitality Tent, where for 100 bucks, you get open bar, food by Theirry Catering, music by Skam DJs and a Sol Republic headphones experience.
“We realized that we have people just driving home and pulling over to be there and watch and hang out,” says Irie, “so I was like, Let’s put something together where they can have fun and engage, too.”
So does Irie play in the tournament?
“I hit a couple balls around the day – I’ll put it that way,” he says. ““Play” is a very strong word when you’re talking about golf [laughs]. I tend to smack a couple here or there. But it’s so much fun.”
The fun continues later that night at LIV Nightclub for a high-energy concert. “We’ve been blessed over the years to have some of the most amazing acts,” says Irie, “from Timbaland to Jamie Foxx to Miami’s own Flo Rida to Ne-Yo. This year, we’re super-excited to have Sky Blu from LMFAO and Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes performing, and then we have Jermaine Dupri doing a live DJ set. So it’s entertainment galore.”
After sleeping late, revelers can head to Lucky Strike from 6-9 p.m. Saturday for some bowling and star-ogling at the South Beach hotspot, where many celebs and Heat players will show off their skills (want your own lane? It’s $2,500, and includes up to eight bowlers).
So who’s the best bowler on the Heat team?
“I gotta say, Dwyane [Wade] and Udonis [Haslem] are both great, but Udonis may have gotten the edge [last year],” says Irie. “He gets those strikes.” So did anyone break 200? “I think Udonis did, at least once – it was Strike City in there, man [laughs].”
And for the Irie Weekend finale, the group heads to Mokai on 23rd Street in Miami Beach for a more intimate club experience.
“Everyone’s invited, but it’s a smaller venue so people can really mix and mingle, and get a little more sexy, because we have supermodel Selita Ebanks hosting the night for us,” says Irie. “That definitely helps us close out the weekend.”
