Dennis Quaid comes clean about drug use

Dennis Quaid has spilled to Newsweek about his past struggles with cocaine.

The actor, who plays the father in the Bethany Hamilton biopic Soul Surfer, became addicted shortly after moving to Hollywood in 1974 to be an actor.

“It was very casual at first,’’ he wrote. “That’s what people were doing when they were at parties. Cocaine was even in the budgets of movies, thinly disguised. It was petty cash, you know?’’

The Texan, 57, said he had a hard time handling his sudden fame; life started really changing after he got a role in the popular 1979 bicycle movie Breaking Away. Drugs helped.

The set of 1987’s The Big Easy was a blur. (That year, he also starred in Suspect with Cher and Innerspace, where he met first wife Meg Ryan.)

“I was a mess,’’ Quaid admitted. “I was getting an hour of sleep a night. I had a reputation for being a ‘bad boy,’ which seemed like a good thing, but basically I just had my head stuck up my ass.’’

Rehab soon followed and he got his act together. He is currently married to a nonceleb with 3-year-old twins.

The upcoming Footloose star (he plays the reverend) has no regrets: “In the end, it taught me humility.’’

Random couple alert

Load up on diapers! He has a 2-month-old son and now rocker Rod Stewart is going to be a grandfather. Life & Style reports daughter Kimberly Stewart is pregnant. The father-to-be is actor Benicio del Toro.

“Kimberly is pregnant. Benicio is the father and is very supportive,” del Toro’s rep, Robin Baum, told the magazine. “Although they are not a couple, they are looking forward to the arrival of the baby.”

Del Toro, 44, is best known for winning an Academy Award for his role in Traffic in 2001; Stewart, 31, was engaged to former Laguna Beach star Talan Torriero.

Shall we dance?

We hear the latest couple in Hollywood is Dancing with the Stars pro dancer Mark Ballas and American Idol castoff Pia Toscano. Spies saw them on what appeared to be a date over the weekend.

According to TMZ, Ballas comforted Toscano on being ousted from the Fox show. Or maybe he’s giving her tips on how to be a contestant.

Leave her alone

Life is way good for Reese Witherspoon. She’s a mega-rich Oscar winner, a newlywed, a mother of two healthy kids. But she doesn’t really have a life. Witherspoon, 35, tells the new issue of Vogue that she cries a lot because she can’t go out like a “normal’’ person.

“I mean, I feel like an ingrate for even thinking anything isn’t good. I’m very, very, very lucky,’’ the plucky Legally Blonde star said. “I parted with my privacy a long time ago. We went different ways. And sometimes I mourn it. Sometimes I will sit in the car and cry. Because I can’t get out. That’s the only thing: I mourn the loss of my privacy.’’
