Danielle Nicole Q&A
In town for a personal appearance, we chat up handbag designer Danielle DiFerdinando.
When it comes to a career in fashion, Danielle DiFerdinando literally has it in the bag. Her price-is-right handbag line, Danielle-Nicole, is a fave amongst celebs (Kristin Cavallari! Anna Dello Russo! Rachel Zoe! Oprah Winfrey!) and vegans alike thanks to her alternative use of fabrics mimicking leather. Recently in town for a personal appearance at Macy’s, we chat up the design darling.
When did you get the aha! moment that handbag design would be your path? I’ve always been fascinated with fashion and design from a very early age. As a child, I use to rummage through my mothers closet and accessorize myself from head to toe. Striking a pose with handbags in the mirror, while all the other girls were playing with Barbies, I knew then I was going to be designing handbags.
During your internship with Bergdorf Goodman you carried a different bag of your own design to work each day. How did this gesture shape your future? I felt very privileged to intern at Bergdorf Goodman and I knew that anything I designed had to be the best of the best to carry into Bergdorf’s. Carrying a different bag into work daily emphasized to others that I could design versatile and trend driven bags, which is an integral part of the Danielle Nicole DNA.
Your line can now be found in Macy's, Nordstrom, Dillard's and more. To what personal trait do you attribute your success? Success takes an incredible amount of hard-work, determination, and staying focused. Maintaining focus on a goal is key. Having said that, I couldn't have reached my success without a strong team that I'm surrounded by on a day-to -day basis.
What is the best advice anyone has ever given you? Love and respect your family. Your success stems from your roots.
You were recently in Miami, what do you love most about the Magic City? Miami is a great city. I love the exciting energy and diverse culture and of course the magnificent beaches! The bright colors of the city and the architecture of the beautiful homes are so inspiring.
Tell us a secret about you! Every now and then, when I have free time, I will walk along the Garment District and reminisce how this all started. It’s quite sentimental and makes me realize how far I've come since playing dress up in my mother’s closet.
