Celebrate 4-20 with style at Tobacco Road and Chalk
For those who dig, er, numerology, of course.
Downtown Miami isn't just a place to avoid during Heat games and protests, but for those who like Downtown but prefer to remain low key, check out Villa 221's new Hide Out, the second floor of their 8,500 square foot space where beginning at 11 p.m. every Friday the so-called "un-club" with no cover and no velvet rope mentality (or lack thereof) opens its doors to a cool cocktailing crowd which last week during its official launch included a slew of NBA and NFL players.
An earthy crowd is expected from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, April 20 at a special Earth Day happy hour event at Area 31, which celebrates its new 16th floor garden with $5 cocktails and bar snacks with a portion of the proceeds going to the local non-profit, Roots in the City. Among the drink specials, an organic mojito with home grown mint and organic cachaca and the "Exhalation," featuring organic basil infused vodka, cucumber agave puree and soda. The garden, incidentally, is no joke, created with the help of Paradise Farms down in Homestead. Rooftop gardens--the new rooftop pools? Perhaps.
More Earth Day awareness, this time at Piola on Miami Beach, which on April 22, will shut its lights from noon until midnight for an entire day of candlelight dining, the purpose of which is “aimed at highlighting just one of several acts of green (preservation) that help reduce the carbon footprint and greenhouse emissions.” The popular pizza place will also donate 1% of its daily revenues from April 15 to April 22 to ECOMB, the Environmental Coalition of Miami and the Beaches.
Perhaps backyards are the new rooftop pools, at least over in Wynwood, where Wood Tavern has launched a new Sunday party, Backyard Boogie, "a weekly BBQ with fun, soul and a whole lot of sweet." On the drink menu is $4 spiked lemonade, $6 Micheladas and $4 "sinful Southern-style" tea by Jeremiah Sweet Tea Vodka. There are also ribs for $8 and burgers for $4. The official launch party takes place from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 22 with a free cocktail hour for supporters of Kulturpark, a public art project investigating an abandoned amusement park in Berlin, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. DJs Ruen and Dexter Love will be spinning. For more information on how to support Kulturpark, though we do recommend supporting art projects closer to home, click here.
For those who dig, er, numerology, starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, 4-20, Chalk Miami Beach presents the fantastically titled Cheech & Pong, "a night of celebrating everything herbal including a fundraiser for marijuana law reform and tons of herb based product giveaways." In addition, there will be a screening of rakontur's scintillating smuggling documentary Square Grouper, hemp inspired cocktails from 10 to 11 p.m. a fashion presentation by Nug Brand and $4.20 cocktail specials. And let’s not forget about ping pong all night long. At 9 p.m. on Saturday, Chalk celebrates Earth Day with a fundraiser, also for ECOMB. A $20 donation gets you free drinks from 10 to 11 p.m. and free ping pong from 11 p.m. until midnight. Plus, green inspired cocktails and a showcase of sustainable fashions. A "Green-a-palooza”, as they have described it, to say the least.
But back to 4/20, a date not lost on Tobacco Road, whose 420 Fest from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Friday will feature a slew of spliffy—er, spiffy distractions, with 20 bands and acts including Panther Sequoia, former member of The Violent Femmes, a 420 Rolling Contest—tobacco, natch, DJs, vendors and food and drink specials. Cover is only $5. For more information go here.
And finally, for those who love to take credit for discovering the next ‘it’ neighborhood, forget about Little Haiti, where The Rhythm Foundation and Little Haiti Cultural Center have already been there, done that with Big Night in Little Haiti, taking place the third Friday of every month. Starting at 6 p.m. Friday, April 20 at the LHCC, 212-260 NE 59th Terrace, is a free show by Tabou Combo. In between sets, the MAM Soundbomb, Bus with Mizikpam.com DJ Mack will entertain. There’s also food, drinks, free parking and an after show party at the 7th Circuit Studios. For more information, click here.
