Boutique of the week: Glammed Up Girl
We thought we'd never have a reason to go to Miami Lakes... wherever that is.

When self-professed shop-a-holics Marilena Otero and Eileen Lama decided to do something productive with their shopping addiction and launch an online women's boutique called GlammedUpGirl.com, they really believed they were going to succeed on making it big on the Internet. But after three months of selling cheap, chic apparel and accessories on their website, the two Miami Lakes residents earned such a following locally that they were able to open up a quaint shop in their hometown, aptly named Glammed Up Girl boutique.
"We sold online to places like New York, but our friends and Miami customers didn't like the online thing so much," says Otero. "They preferred coming over my house to buy." Otero and Lama still use Internet sites like Facebook and MySpace to advertise the inventory in their recessionista friendly shop where all items costs under $100.
Designed with a girly touch, the store is painted purple and has a funky chandelier hanging in its center. A small zebra print rug adds some spunk to the décor, as does a tan leather couch filled with mauve and black pillows. On the racks hang everything from Pucci-inspired frocks to ethnic-print maxis to multi-hued jumpsuits and beach cover-ups reminiscent of Juicy Couture. Labels like Collective Concepts, Plain Jane, Rubber Ducky, Elan and Fire are best sellers when it comes to clothing.
"We also do really well with our accessories," says Lama while pointing to a table teeming with colorful rings, necklaces and bracelets sparkling with Swarovski crystals. "That's our Diaphani Collection, which Nordstrom carries and we sell for so much less." The duo also stocks sunglasses by Jimmy Crystal and trendy jewelry line Buffet, which consists of dainty bracelets filled with charms and crystals and come with adorable names like Caviar, Calamari, Side Dish and the Story Line, which can be customized. Ladies who want to show off their fresh pedis with some bling can nab sandals by Dizzy.
Aside from scoring some cute garbs, Lama says she wants customers to feel good when they come to the store. "When you're here, we want you to feel glammed up," says Lama. "We give you wine, we let you relax and we don't push anything on you," chimes Otero.
