Hot new group Local 34 has journeyed from humble beginnings to steadily climbing up to the brink of stardom in Miami within a year. Initially overcoming a major lack of resources, the handsome quintet got their start rehearsing in storage space number 34, and aptly chose this symbol as their moniker. Their cheerful Latin alternative sound splashed with tropical beats fits in perfectly with the soundtrack of life in South Florida.

All five band mates - Dario Morillo (vocals/guitar), Aneudy Lara  (vocals/keyboard), Marvin Romero  (bass), Alfredo Vado (drums), Mauricio Nava (lead guitar) - look like professional models who just walked off of the runways of Miami Fashion Week. Behind the well coiffed hair and designer clothes lies pure substance - these guys definitely know what they are doing when they get on a stage. Citing Juanes, The Police and Los Amigos Invisibles as their heroes, Local 34 recognize the best that’s out there and are striving to become household names as well.

Each member hails from South America, Central America or the Caribbean and brings the flavor of their origins into the musical mix. While one of their songs might be heavy with a pop and reggae influence, the next might be an energetic combination of rock and merengue. “As Latinos we have such a rich culture and have been blessed with so many different rhythms that we want people to open their eyes to that and embrace it. We want people to experience the magic of our music and enjoy the combination of rhythms like it has never been done before,” Lara said.

They’ve come a long way and have no plans to stop anytime soon. Amidst national promotion of their lively single “No Me Importa Na” and wrapping up their album by the summer, these five plan to tour all over the state.  Check these guys out as soon as you can, so you can say you knew them when.

Local 34 will perform at 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 16 at Jazid, 1342 Washington Ave, Miami Beach; 305- 673-9372. Visit the band’s website at www.myspace.com/local34music.
