5 Things We Are Excited About at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival

 

South Beach Wine and Food Festival takes Miami by storm this week. Here are the things that have the food nerds salivating.

1. SavorBand
The days of putting down your plate of food and glass of wine to grab a pamphlet of information on your favorite restaurant or recipe are over. The SavorBand is a wristband that allows a hands-free way to remember your favorite items in the tasting tents. Just tap a tablet reader associated to the item, rate the item you liked, and when you get home enter the code on your SavorBand at the corresponding website to retrieve your favorites. How easy is that? Available at events at the North Tent all weekend (The Q, Burger Bash, etc.)

2. Chandon's new champagne.
If you were lucky enough to attend Moët Hennessy's The Q or FLAUNT events on Thursday night, you were among the few who got to taste the newest vintage of sparkling wine from Chandon before it hits the shelves. Chandon American Summer was poured at a special lounge at the events, but won't be available in South Florida until Memorial Day.

3. Grilling on a Boat
Celebrity Cruises has created some memorable events in recent years, with tours of their cruise ship paired with distinct food and drink options. This year they are hosting an interactive lunch at the Lawn Club Grill, on the top deck of the Celebrity Reflection, on Saturday afternoon. Think spiked lemonade and lessons in grilling techniques all surrounded by stunning views of the Biscayne Bay.

4. Satellite Events
This year unofficial events (i.e. dinners and pop-up bars) are invading Miami, a good thing for locals who don't have tickets to some of the pricey SBWFF events. Our pick is Eats and Beats, where several dozen local restaurants and bars will showcase their best bites and drinks to sets of live music at the Moore Building (4040 NE 2nd Ave.) on Saturday at 8 p.m.

5. Free Movie
The Miami Beach SoundScape at the New World Center (500 17th St.) will screen 'Soul of a Banquet', the story of chef Cecilia Chiang, known for introducing America to authentic Chinese food with the opening of her internationally renowned restaurant, The Mandarin, in 1961. Chiang and director Wayne Wang will be in attendance. Showtime is Sunday at 6 p.m. and is open to the public. A ticketed reception follows the movie at the Metropolitan by COMO, Miami Beach.
